Job description

Summary:

The San Diego Union-Tribune is seeking an ambitious, resourceful, thoughtful and tenacious reporter to cover and serve the diverse communities of California’s second-largest city and beyond. The ideal candidate will have strong writing skills, bottomless curiosity, a knack for people-centered reporting, a deep interest in journalism that engages with and reflects local communities, and a track record of enterprise reporting with real-world impact.

As a border city, Navy hub and cultural destination, San Diego is home to a clutch of communities unlike any other, and this reporter will get to know many of them — its especially large and multifarious military, LGBTQ+, Indigenous and immigrant communities, yes, but also its more intentional communities spanning everything from surfing to cruising to housing cooperatives. This beat is as rich, expansive and exciting as you make it.

What you will do:

  • Report on San Diego communities — the issues that matter most to them, the people from there doing inspiring work, how they’re shaping policy, how policy impacts them

  • Constantly work to develop mutual trust and sources within and around communities

  • Pursue in-depth enterprise stories, prioritizing proactive instead of reactive reporting and moving to stay one step ahead of the news whenever possible

  • Stay informed on local news and national trends, and what they mean for San Diego

  • Meet daily and long-term deadlines while working on multiple projects

  • Cover breaking news and assist on other big stories as assigned

  • Collaborate with colleagues covering local governments, immigration, health and more, as well as with investigative reporters, photographers and graphic artists

What you will bring:

  • Demonstrated knack for news and enterprise reporting, developing sources, identifying compelling story ideas and pursuing tips

  • Enthusiasm, curiosity and a drive to understand the priorities and perspectives of San Diego communities, bringing a solutions element to our journalism wherever possible

  • Collaborative spirit, inclusive approach and comfort working with data and visual journalists, researchers and others on all aspects of a story through to publication

  • Skill in clearly and compellingly presenting complex subject matter, and in working creatively and narratively to shape stories

  • Committed to holding power to account and to producing journalism that reflects, strengthens and serves diverse communities

  • A creative and inclusive approach and an appetite for experimentation

  • Bonus: proficiency in other language(s) in addition to English, especially Spanish, Tagalog, Vietnamese, Arabic or Chinese languages

Benefits and Compensation:

The hourly wage is $29.81 - $31.73 + cell phone stipend. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to geographic location, education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, the Company offers eligible employees a variety of benefits including medical, dental, life and disability insurance, 401k, as well as paid time off and select paid holidays (all benefits are based on eligibility).
