Job description

Protect Democracy seeks highly motivated lawyers to join our team on a contract basis for six months to support our work to protect free and fair elections this year.

The attorneys will work between 20-40 hours per week on substantive litigation tasks such as: legal research; drafting pleadings, legal briefs and memoranda; drafting discovery related documents, including motions, deposition outlines, third party subpoenas, etc.; assisting with the development of expert reports; and other legal work to support ongoing and new litigation. Applicants must be able to devote at least 20 hours per week  beginning no later than October 5, 2026 through late March 2027.

An ideal candidate has a minimum of three years of civil litigation experience, comfort with fast-moving litigation and some or all of the tasks listed above, and the flexibility to start immediately. Some experience with election law is a plus, but not required. We welcome applicants with significantly more experience than the minimum listed, and we are looking for candidates with a strong commitment to our mission of preventing our democracy from declining into a more authoritarian form of government. We will pay an hourly rate of $125-$175 per hour, depending on experience.

At Protect Democracy, we believe that a broad range of backgrounds, perspectives, and lived experiences strengthen our ability to analyze problems, craft solutions, and drive meaningful change. We are a remote organization; contract attorneys can work from any location in the United States as long as they are in compliance with all applicable bar membership rules.

We will begin interviewing on September 14, 2026 and proceed on a rolling basis — interested candidates should apply as soon as possible. To apply for this contract position, please complete the application linked below. You will be asked to upload your resume and a writing sample as PDFs and answer a few screening questions. Applications missing any of the required materials will be considered incomplete and not reviewed.
