Job description

We are sharing a specialised part-time consulting opportunity for experienced public relations and corporate communications professionals with hands-on expertise in media relations, announcement strategy, executive communications, launch planning, and reputation management.

This role focuses on designing and evaluating realistic PR and communications environments that reflect the workflows, tools, information, and judgement calls encountered in professional communications teams. Selected experts will create authentic scenarios, define expected outcomes, review completed work, and establish standards that distinguish strong communications judgement from plausible but ineffective approaches.

Key Responsibilities

PR & Communications Scenario Design

  • Develop realistic tasks based on PR or communications work you have personally performed
  • Define the underlying communications issue and the decision a strong practitioner should reach
  • Create scenarios involving incomplete, conflicting, or time-sensitive information
  • Ensure tasks require genuine professional judgement rather than simple information retrieval
  • Design challenges that reflect real-world communications workflows

Media Relations

  • Develop and evaluate scenarios involving media outreach and reporter engagement
  • Review pitching strategies, media targeting, timing, and messaging
  • Assess whether proposed approaches appropriately reflect journalist and publication dynamics
  • Identify weak positioning, poor targeting, or ineffective outreach decisions
  • Apply practical judgement grounded in hands-on media relations experience

Embargo & Exclusive Strategy

  • Design scenarios involving embargoes, exclusives, and coordinated media outreach
  • Evaluate publication timing, reporter selection, and sequencing decisions
  • Assess trade-offs between reach, exclusivity, timing, and message control
  • Identify risks created by poorly structured embargo strategies
  • Review proposed approaches for practical communications effectiveness

Announcement & Launch Communications

  • Evaluate communications plans for launches, announcements, and company developments
  • Review message sequencing across internal and external audiences
  • Assess timing, stakeholder coordination, and communication priorities
  • Identify gaps or inconsistencies that could weaken an announcement
  • Evaluate whether launch communications appropriately support broader objectives

Interview Preparation

  • Develop and review executive and spokesperson interview-preparation materials
  • Assess talking points, anticipated questions, messaging priorities, and supporting information
  • Identify inconsistencies or vulnerabilities in prepared responses
  • Evaluate whether materials enable clear and credible communication
  • Apply professional judgement to media-facing scenarios

Coverage Evaluation & Reporting

  • Review media coverage and communications performance
  • Assess relevance, quality, message penetration, and broader implications of coverage
  • Evaluate whether reporting accurately reflects communications outcomes
  • Identify misleading interpretations or incomplete analysis
  • Review recommendations based on available coverage and supporting information

Corrections & Reputation Management

  • Develop scenarios involving inaccurate coverage, corrections, or communications issues
  • Assess whether escalation and response decisions are proportionate and effective
  • Review correction strategies, outreach, and follow-through
  • Identify risks created by inappropriate or poorly timed responses
  • Evaluate recommendations for protecting message accuracy and organisational credibility

Communications Workflows

  • Work with simulated environments containing realistic email, shared storage, CRM, project management, social media management, web analytics, SEO/AEO, advertising, CMS, product analytics, and support information
  • Specify the documents, personas, messages, and tool states required for authentic communications scenarios
  • Reconcile information across multiple sources and stakeholders
  • Evaluate multi-step communications workflows
  • Identify missed dependencies, inconsistent messaging, or incomplete execution

Reference Answers & Evaluation Criteria

  • Write or review reference solutions for PR and communications scenarios
  • Define clear criteria separating strong professional responses from plausible but incorrect ones
  • Establish standards for judgement, prioritisation, sequencing, execution, and escalation
  • Explain why particular communications decisions are stronger or weaker
  • Ensure evaluation criteria reflect realistic PR and corporate communications practice

Quality Review & Evaluation

  • Review completed scenarios and evaluate proposed communications decisions
  • Assess diagnostic reasoning, prioritisation, trade-offs, planning, execution, and reporting
  • Evaluate work spanning multiple communications tools and information sources
  • Identify missed issues, incorrect interpretations, or weak recommendations
  • Provide clear written reasoning supporting evaluation decisions

Ideal Profile

  • Hands-on professional experience in public relations, media relations, or corporate communications
  • Experience personally pitching reporters, managing embargoes, and handling corrections
  • Experience with announcement strategy, interview preparation, media outreach, and launch communications
  • Strong understanding of communications sequencing, reputation considerations, and media relations
  • Comfortable working across email, shared drives, and project-management tools
  • Strong ability to diagnose communications issues from incomplete or conflicting information
  • Clear written reasoning and ability to explain why a communications decision is effective or ineffective
  • Prior experience developing AI training environments, reinforcement-learning environments, or simulated business case studies is strongly preferred
  • Rubric Academy or Rubric Bootcamp certification is strongly preferred
  • Comfortable working independently with structured evaluation frameworks and project guidelines

Engagement Details

  • Part-time independent contractor engagement
  • Fully remote
  • Flexible scheduling based on project requirements
  • Compensation: $50–$90/hour
  • Work focuses on public relations, corporate communications, media strategy, scenario design, and expert evaluation
  • Applicants complete a short multiple-choice knowledge assessment specific to PR and communications before review
  • Projects may be extended, shortened, or concluded based on project needs and performance
  • Work must be completed without using confidential or proprietary information belonging to any employer, client, institution, or other third party
  • H1-B and STEM OPT support is unavailable for this engagement
