SRI’s Integrated Systems & Solutions Division (InSyS) designs leading-edge R&D technologies that power the systems end users depend on every day. SRI’s Center for Software Engineering is looking for a motivated Software Engineer who is passionate about creating and applying world-class, high-value software solutions for government and industry within a company whose culture values both hard work and a balanced life. The candidate will collaborate with other talented engineers (both local and remote) on a set of diverse projects ranging from embedded systems to web development. We value clear, logical thinking, good communication skills, a focus on quality and security, and the ability to work well in a team of engineering and research professionals across SRI’s broad range of technology domains.

This position will work remotely.

Responsibilities:
  • Work with a small, collaborative team to develop software solutions supporting a variety of applied R&D programs for DoD and other U.S. Government customers, commercial clients, and internal research efforts.
  • Contribute across a range of software development activities, which may include rapid prototyping and proof-of-concept development, research software, data collection and analysis, user interfaces and web applications, and development of robust software for higher-TRL and production environments.
  • Work with evolving requirements and technical challenges, collaborating closely with other team members to clarify requirements, identify appropriate solutions, and seek guidance when needed.
  • Apply sound software engineering practices throughout the development lifecycle, including design, implementation, testing, debugging, documentation, version control, and code review.
  • As program needs require, integrate software with sensors, instrumentation, commercial components, and other hardware systems.
  • Participate in occasional customer meetings, demonstrations, field testing, and other program activities, with minimal travel expected.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field. New graduates and early-career candidates are encouraged to apply. Masters degree a plus.
  • Due to U.S. Government contract requirements, candidates must be a US Citizen with the ability to obtain/maintain a security clearance.
  • Strong software engineering and computer science fundamentals, including software design, data structures, algorithms, debugging, and testing.
  • Familiarity with common software development tools and practices such as Git and version control, automated testing, continuous integration/deployment, APIs, containers, Linux, and cloud development environments.
  • Experience with two or more general-purpose programming languages is highly desirable. Languages commonly used by the team include:
    • C++
    • C#
    • Python
    • JavaScript/TypeScript and other ECMAScript-family languages
    • Experience with Rust is also of interest
  • Experience integrating software with sensors, instrumentation, embedded systems, or other hardware is highly desirable for some current program needs.
  • Experience using AI-assisted and agentic software development tools as part of a software development workflow is desirable. Candidates should understand the importance of independently reviewing and validating generated code and applying sound engineering judgment when using these tools. The availability and permitted use of such tools may vary by program.
  • Ability and willingness to learn new languages, technologies, frameworks, and development environments as program needs evolve.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills, including the ability to communicate questions, identify ambiguity, seek assistance when appropriate, and work effectively as part of a collaborative engineering team.
  • Ability to work effectively with evolving requirements and across projects ranging from exploratory prototypes and demonstrations to more mature, production-oriented software systems.
  • Ability to travel occasionally for customer meetings, demonstrations, field testing, and other program activities.

The salary range is: $81,522-$90,000. Salary ranges will vary and are based on several factors, including geographic location, market competitiveness and equity amongst internal employees in similar roles. Positions may also qualify for SRI's Pay for Outstanding Performance program or the annual Performance Based Compensation program.
