Job description

We are sharing a specialised part-time consulting opportunity for experienced journalism, media, and communications professionals with strong expertise in editorial judgement, content strategy, fact-based reporting, messaging, and professional communications.

This role focuses on reviewing professional documents, spreadsheets, and presentation materials related to journalism, media, and communications. Selected experts will assess outputs for factual accuracy, editorial quality, clarity, analytical rigour, audience relevance, and overall professional credibility.

Key Responsibilities

Journalism & Editorial Review

  • Evaluate journalistic and editorial work products for accuracy, clarity, completeness, and professional quality
  • Assess whether factual claims are appropriately supported and contextualised
  • Identify unsupported assertions, misleading framing, inconsistencies, and material omissions
  • Review structure, sourcing logic, tone, and editorial judgement
  • Apply professional standards associated with credible journalism and editorial practice

Media & Content Analysis

  • Review media-related reports, content plans, briefs, and analytical materials
  • Assess whether content appropriately reflects the intended audience, channel, and objective
  • Evaluate narrative structure, messaging priorities, and information hierarchy
  • Identify weak positioning, unclear arguments, or poorly supported conclusions
  • Apply practical judgement to realistic media and content scenarios

Communications Strategy

  • Evaluate communication plans, messaging frameworks, and stakeholder materials
  • Assess whether key messages are clear, consistent, and appropriate for their intended audiences
  • Review communication objectives, positioning, and channel considerations
  • Identify gaps between strategic objectives and proposed messaging
  • Evaluate whether recommendations are practical and professionally credible

Fact-Checking & Information Quality

  • Assess factual accuracy and internal consistency across written materials
  • Identify unsupported claims, questionable evidence, or missing context
  • Review whether sources and supporting information are used appropriately
  • Evaluate distinctions between fact, interpretation, and opinion
  • Identify issues that could undermine the credibility of a communication or publication

Audience & Messaging

  • Review content for audience relevance, accessibility, and clarity
  • Assess tone, framing, terminology, and level of detail
  • Evaluate whether complex information is communicated effectively
  • Identify messaging that may be confusing, overly broad, or insufficiently supported
  • Review consistency across different stakeholder or audience groups

Documents & Presentation Review

  • Evaluate reports, communication plans, spreadsheets, and slide decks for accuracy and completeness
  • Review presentations for narrative flow, message clarity, and audience effectiveness
  • Identify factual, editorial, analytical, aesthetic, and formatting issues
  • Assess whether charts, tables, and visual elements accurately represent underlying information
  • Ensure key findings and recommendations are communicated clearly

Structured Evaluation & Feedback

  • Assess assigned outputs against domain-specific quality criteria
  • Identify factual, editorial, strategic, and presentation weaknesses
  • Distinguish substantive content issues from minor stylistic concerns
  • Provide clear, structured written feedback explaining identified strengths and weaknesses
  • Apply evaluation standards consistently across different media and communications work products

Ideal Profile

  • 5+ years of relevant professional experience in journalism, communications, media, editorial, content strategy, public relations, or a closely related field
  • Strong editorial judgement and ability to assess factual accuracy and information quality
  • Experience producing or reviewing professional communications, editorial content, reports, or media materials
  • Strong understanding of audience, messaging, narrative structure, and communication strategy
  • Ability to identify unsupported claims, weak reasoning, and ineffective communication
  • Highly proficient with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace
  • Advanced proficiency with PowerPoint / Google Slides
  • Strong spreadsheet and analytical skills
  • Native or professional fluency in English
  • Excellent written communication and ability to provide precise, structured feedback
  • Strong attention to factual, editorial, analytical, and presentation detail
  • Master's degree or higher from a recognised institution is advantageous

Engagement Details

  • Part-time independent contractor engagement
  • Fully remote
  • Flexible scheduling based on project requirements
  • Compensation: $70–$110/hour
  • Work includes evaluation of journalism, media, communications, editorial, spreadsheet, and presentation materials
  • Projects may be extended, shortened, or concluded based on project needs and performance
  • Work must be completed without using confidential or proprietary information belonging to any employer, client, institution, or other third party
  • H1-B and STEM OPT support is unavailable for this engagement
