Job description

We are sharing a specialised part-time consulting opportunity for experienced mechanical engineers with strong expertise in mechanical design, equipment and systems engineering, technical drawings, specifications, and engineering problem-solving.

This role focuses on reviewing mechanical engineering content and workflows across realistic professional scenarios. Selected engineers will assess mechanical designs, technical drawings, system specifications, troubleshooting approaches, and related engineering work for technical accuracy, design quality, feasibility, and professional rigour.

Key Responsibilities

Mechanical Design Review

  • Evaluate mechanical designs for technical accuracy, functionality, and engineering soundness
  • Review components, assemblies, machines, and mechanical systems
  • Assess design assumptions, constraints, tolerances, and operating requirements
  • Identify design weaknesses, inconsistencies, or impractical recommendations
  • Apply real-world mechanical engineering judgement to complex design scenarios

Technical Drawings & Specifications

  • Review engineering drawings, blueprints, schematics, and technical documentation
  • Assess dimensions, tolerances, materials, interfaces, and specifications
  • Identify inconsistencies between drawings, requirements, and proposed designs
  • Evaluate whether documentation is sufficiently precise for manufacturing or implementation
  • Review specification compliance across mechanical components and systems

Equipment & Mechanical Systems

  • Evaluate scenarios involving industrial equipment, machinery, and mechanical systems
  • Review system configuration, component selection, and operating considerations
  • Assess mechanical performance, reliability, maintainability, and suitability
  • Identify potential design or integration issues
  • Evaluate recommendations involving equipment modification or improvement

Engineering Troubleshooting

  • Review diagnostic approaches for mechanical failures and performance issues
  • Assess whether proposed root causes are supported by available evidence
  • Evaluate troubleshooting sequences and corrective actions
  • Identify overlooked failure modes or unsupported technical assumptions
  • Review solutions for practicality, safety, and engineering effectiveness

Design & Specification Compliance

  • Assess whether proposed designs satisfy stated engineering requirements
  • Review conformity with drawings, specifications, performance targets, and technical constraints
  • Identify missing requirements or specification conflicts
  • Evaluate engineering trade-offs involving performance, manufacturability, reliability, and cost
  • Determine whether proposed solutions are professionally defensible

Comparative Engineering Evaluation

  • Compare alternative engineering responses or design approaches
  • Assess outputs based on technical rigour, design soundness, and specification precision
  • Identify meaningful differences between stronger and weaker solutions
  • Evaluate whether recommendations reflect realistic engineering constraints
  • Provide clear reasoning supporting evaluation decisions

Structured Evaluation & Feedback

  • Review mechanical engineering work products for accuracy and professional quality
  • Identify substantive technical, design, specification, and reasoning weaknesses
  • Distinguish material engineering issues from minor presentation differences
  • Provide concise, evidence-based written feedback
  • Apply evaluation standards consistently across assignments

Ideal Profile

  • 4+ years of relevant professional experience in mechanical engineering or a closely related role
  • Experience as a Mechanical Engineer, Mechanical Design Engineer, Product Engineer, Project Engineer, Test Engineer, or similar engineering professional
  • Demonstrated experience designing, evaluating, or maintaining mechanical products, machinery, equipment, or systems
  • Strong ability to interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and technical specifications
  • Practical understanding of mechanical design, system integration, troubleshooting, and specification compliance
  • Ability to evaluate technical recommendations for feasibility and engineering soundness
  • Strong analytical judgement and attention to technical detail
  • Strong written English communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and provide precise professional feedback
