IBT Media

News Media & Journalism (Digital)

Under the umbrella of IBT Media, IBTimes launched in 2005 to connect the dots around the world to fuel your passion for news and ability to make informed decisions. IBTimes has a vision to document the unfolding story of the global economy in ways radically different from other publishers at the time. While there were some publishers that covered business in various geographies, it was often done through the perspective of their home countries, missing nuance and important detail to make the coverage locally relevant. With constant innovation, we are ensuring that whether by website, app, newsletter or feed, you have access to global information that moves your world. Recognizing the incomplete narrative, IBT quickly launched foreign editions, not only to report news back to New York, but to become an indispensable tool to serve local economies and businesses as well. Now, under new management, IBT Media is upholding that philosophy and focused on engaging a new generation of readers with content that speaks to their interests, analysis that serve their businesses, and insight to make sense of a globally connected world.

Job description

Newsweek is the global media organization that has earned audience time and trust for more than 90 years. Newsweek reaches 100 million people each month with thought-provoking news, opinion, images, graphics, and video delivered across a dozen print and digital platforms. Headquartered in New York City, Newsweek also publishes international editions in EMEA and Asia.

Newsweek is seeking an exceptional Copy Editor to join its remote editorial team. This role combines high-level copy editing, editorial quality control, freelancer management and assignment coordination.

The ideal candidate has an outstanding command of the English language, an expert-level understanding of AP Style, and an exceptionally sharp eye for errors and inconsistencies. This person should be able to recognize not only obvious grammatical mistakes but also subtle problems involving syntax, word choice, tone, factual clarity, attribution, headlines, punctuation and internal consistency.

In addition to editing, the Copy Editor will help manage the newsroom's freelance workflow. This includes assigning stories to freelance writers, communicating deadlines and editorial objectives, monitoring assignment progress, following up with contributors, reviewing submitted work and ensuring assignments are completed to Newsweek's standards and delivered on schedule.

Working hours are 10:00 am to 7:00 pm (GMT+1), Monday through Friday.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Copy edit and proofread articles for grammar, spelling, punctuation, syntax, clarity, readability and overall editorial quality.
  • Apply AP Style and Newsweek house style consistently, using editorial judgment when style guidelines require interpretation.
  • Fact-check and verify editorial details, including names, titles, dates, locations, figures, quotations, terminology, links and supporting information.
  • Assign stories and editorial projects to freelance writers based on expertise, availability, editorial priorities and subject matter.
  • Manage multiple freelance assignments and deadlines, tracking stories from assignment through submission, editing and publication while providing freelancers with clear editorial direction, including story angles, objectives, scope, audience, reporting requirements and deadlines.
  • Communicate revisions, additional reporting needs and editorial feedback clearly and professionally to freelance contributors.
  • Manage stories within the Newsweek CMS, including editing, formatting, reviewing and preparing content for publication.
  • Collaborate with editors, reporters, freelancers and other teams to resolve issues, balance competing priorities, improve workflows and ensure content moves efficiently from assignment to publication.

Requirements

  • Experience at a newspaper, magazine, digital publication, newsroom or comparable editorial organization.
  • Strong knowledge of English grammar, spelling, syntax, sentence structure and usage.
  • Ability to identify questionable facts, inconsistencies, unsupported claims, attribution problems and potentially misleading language.
  • Strong knowledge of AP Style guidelines.
  • Familiarity with publishing stories through a CMS.
  • Ability to write or edit headlines, subheads, captions, summaries, standfirsts and other presentation elements.
  • Honed organization and time management skills, and the ability to manage multiple projects at the same time.
