Job description

Description

WorldWide Mission Critical is seeking a Director/Principal, Transmission Electrical Engineering to serve as the company's senior in-house technical authority on electric transmission systems supporting hyperscale data center campuses across the United States. This role is responsible for transmission system planning analysis, substation design review, and construction-phase technical oversight across WMCC's development portfolio. The role partners closely with WMCC's Power Interconnection team (who own the utility/TSO/DSO relationship and commercial negotiation) and with internal development and engineering teams to ensure transmission and substation infrastructure is technically sound, standards-compliant, and delivered on schedule.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as WMCC's senior technical authority on electric transmission engineering, spanning system planning studies (load flow, short circuit, stability) and physical substation design (site layout, protection & control, equipment specification).
  • Review and validate transmission interconnection studies, system impact studies, and facility studies prepared by utilities, ISOs/RTOs, and third-party engineering consultants.
  • Provide technical oversight of substation design packages prepared by EPC firms and engineering consultants, ensuring compliance with NERC, NESC, and IEEE standards and utility-specific design criteria.
  • Support construction-phase technical oversight for transmission lines and substations, high voltage equipment procurement, coordinating with construction management teams, EPCs, and utility construction/inspection personnel.
  • Partner with the Development teams to translate utility-provided technical requirements (queue position studies, connection agreements, protection requirements) into actionable engineering scope.
  • Evaluate the technical risk and schedule impact of transmission/substation constraints, providing clear input to development, commercial, and finance stakeholders.
  • Maintain working knowledge of NERC reliability standards and regional transmission planning criteria (e.g., PJM, MISO, ERCOT, WECC) across WMCC's active development markets.
  • Represent WMCC in technical working sessions with utility/RTO transmission planning and engineering counterparts.
Requirements
  • 8+ years of experience in electric transmission engineering at a utility, transmission owner, or engineering/EPC consulting firm, spanning both transmission system planning and substation design and/or construction.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • Deep working knowledge of transmission planning studies (load flow, short circuit, stability) and substation design fundamentals (protection & control, equipment specification, physical layout).
  • Direct experience with utility interconnection processes, including queue studies and system impact/facility study review.
  • Familiarity with NERC reliability standards and regional transmission planning criteria in at least one major U.S. market (PJM, MISO, ERCOT, WECC, SPP, or similar).
  • Demonstrated ability to operate as a senior individual technical contributor, translating complex engineering analysis into clear guidance for non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Experience specific to hyperscale data center or other large-load interconnection projects.
  • Experience transitioning from a utility/transmission-owner environment into a large-load developer or EPC environment.
  • Experience with substation construction management or construction-phase technical oversight.
  • Familiarity with flexible/curtailable load or BESS interconnection structures.

Core Competencies

  • Transmission system planning & analysis
  • Substation design & engineering standards
  • Utility interconnection process expertise
  • Cross-functional technical communication
  • Independent, senior-level technical judgment

Travel & Work Environment

Remote/flexible within the United States, with an estimated 15–20% travel to project sites, utility offices, and WMCC development team locations as needed.
