Job description

Position Overview

ESS is looking for an E&S Specialist to join our team in Gabon and support environmental and social assignments within the mining sector.

The ideal candidate will have a strong environmental background, practical experience with Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIA), and the ability to work both in the field and on technical reporting. This role is suited to an E&S professional who is comfortable working in multidisciplinary teams and is willing to undertake field assignments when required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the preparation and implementation of Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIA) and related E&S studies.
  • Participate in fieldwork, including environmental and social baseline data collection, site inspections and stakeholder consultations.
  • Conduct environmental and social assessments and contribute to the identification of potential impacts and risks.
  • Support the development of mitigation measures and Environmental and Social Management Plans (ESMPs).
  • Contribute to environmental and social monitoring activities and compliance assessments.
  • Prepare clear, accurate and well-structured technical reports, field notes and other E&S deliverables.
  • Review and analyse environmental and social data collected during field assignments.
  • Support stakeholder engagement activities and document findings where required.
  • Work closely with senior E&S professionals, technical specialists and project teams.
  • Ensure E&S deliverables are completed to a high professional standard and within agreed timelines.
  • Contribute to other E&S assignments undertaken by ESS as required.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Environmental Engineering, Natural Sciences, or a related environmental discipline.
  • 3–6 years of relevant professional experience in environmental and social consulting, mining, infrastructure, energy or related sectors.
  • Demonstrated experience contributing to ESIA projects.
  • Strong environmental assessment and fieldwork capabilities.
  • Good technical report writing skills and the ability to present complex information clearly.
  • Willingness and ability to undertake fieldwork, including potentially in remote or challenging locations.
  • Knowledge of environmental and social standards and good international industry practice is an advantage.
  • Experience in the mining sector is highly desirable.
  • Strong analytical, organisational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Fluency in French is required; working knowledge of English is an advantage.

Preferred Profile

We are looking for a practical and motivated E&S professional who combines strong environmental knowledge with hands-on field experience. The successful candidate should be comfortable moving between field assignments, technical analysis and report writing, and should demonstrate a genuine interest in environmental and social sustainability within the mining sector.

Location

Libreville, Gabon, with travel and field assignments as required.
