Job description

The Carnegie Mellon University Rales Fellows Program is dedicated to cultivating the next generation of STEM leaders and drive innovation by increasing access to a life-changing graduate education. By removing financial barriers to obtaining advanced degrees and providing Fellows with holistic support, the Rales Fellows Program empowers and connects scholars with
others who share a passion for progress and innovation.

The CMU Rales Fellows Program is seeking Seasonal Application Readers to assist with the review of applications for the 2027 cohort. As the program continues to grow nationally, we anticipate a high volume of submissions. Seasonal readers will help ensure each application receives a thoughtful, comprehensive, and fair evaluation aligned with the program’s mission
and selection criteria.

The Rales Fellows Program Application Reader is a seasonal/fixed-term, remote position. Readers will have a flexible weekly schedule and are encouraged to commit between 10–15 hours per week, with the option to work up to 17.5 hours as needed. In addition to a 1-hour training, selected
readers will attend additional meetings as needed.

Training for application readers will take place in early-mid December 2026. Regular hours for application review will commence in January 2027. We anticipate a higher reading volume in early to mid-January, which may extend into February as needed.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Training: Attend one virtual (1-hour) training session to review program goals, selection criteria, and the evaluation process.
  • Application Review: Independently review assigned applications during December–January using a provided rubric and scoring guide.
  • Evaluation Submission: Submit feedback and scores to support selection committee decisions.
  • Confidentiality: Maintain strict confidentiality regarding applicant information and then review process.

Adaptability, excellence, and passion are vital qualities within Carnegie Mellon University. We are in search of a team member who can effectively interact with a varied population of internal and external partners at a high level of integrity. We are looking for someone who shares our values and who will support the mission of the university through their work.

Required Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree
  • Ability to evaluate applicants holistically and align evaluations with program mission and criteria.
  • Experience mentoring or advising students pursuing graduate study, strongly preferred.
  • Faculty members or professionals familiar with graduate admissions expectations are especially encouraged to participate.
  • Experience with selective and holistic graduate admission
  • Reliable internet access and proficiency with Gmail, the Google Suite, Zoom, VPN
  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered

Requirements:

  • Successful pre-employment background check

Additional Information:

  • Conflict of Interest Considerations: Readers must not have current or prospective applicants they directly advise or mentor and must refrain from discussing applicant information outside the review process.
  • Remote Work: A remote work option may be available for candidates who reside in Pennsylvania, New York, Virginia, or Washington, D.C. Any approved remote work arrangement is contingent upon the successful execution of a Remote Work Agreement (RWA) as part of the employment offer process.
  • Fixed Term: This is a seasonal, fixed-term position expected to last through February 2027.
