Stacklet

Computer Software / SaaS

Cloud Governance, Management, Security, and Cost Optimization. Stacklet is a commercial cloud governance platform that helps Global 2000 companies manage their security, operations, visibility, and cost optimization policies in the cloud. Stacklet is built with an open core model around the popular open source project Cloud Custodian. The Stacklet founders are the creative team behind Cloud Custodian. Stacklet provides best practice operations of Cloud Custodian, access to pre-built policies and, in the future, a fully hosted version of Cloud Custodian. With Stacklet, the founders are also working to β€œshift-left” the open source core. This introduces preventative control by giving developers the ability to evaluate both application and infrastructure code against their organization’s governance standards early in the lifecycle. Cloud Custodian is an open-source cloud security and governance project that came out of Capital One’s journey to the public cloud. Cloud Custodian is used by thousands of organizations today including power users like Intuit, Freddie Mac, FICO, Transamerica, Cox Automotive, Microsoft, Reuters, Amazon, Procter & Gamble, etc. Cloud Custodian’s community is vibrant, active and rapidly growing. It includes 280+ developers, 1300+ chat participants and has over 330K downloads per month. Cloud Custodian has a critical advantage over competing solutions in that it is Policy as Code which empowers remediation and automation. Cloud Custodian’s Policy as Code language is easy for IT and security admins to use because it is high order, YAML-based, and leverages a domain-specific language (DSL) where the domain is public cloud resource information. Cloud Custodian’s open source core is also written in Python, so it is easily accessible for developers to use and contribute to.

Job description

Stacklet helps organizations with large cloud estates optimize cost, improve security, and ensure compliance by simplifying and automating all aspects of governance via code. Our company was founded by the creators and maintainers of CNCF's Cloud Custodian, an open-source project used today by thousands of well-known global brands.

Our Stacklet Platform is an award-winning governance as code solution that enables teams to identify and remediate cloud governance issues while establishing preventative guardrails against their recurrence. We support some of the world's biggest cloud service consumers, helping mitigate cloud waste and risk on a large scale.

Overview

As a senior backend software engineer at Stacklet, you'll build the distributed, event-driven services that turn Cloud Custodian into a platform: the GraphQL API our console and customers run on, the pipelines that execute policies across thousands of cloud accounts, and the asset and cost data stores behind them. You'll be working in a deeply technical domain, designing systems that stay correct and observable while running our customers' governance workloads at scale, across multiple clouds and regions.

What we're looking for

Here’s what we’re looking for in an ideal candidate.

  • 5+ years of experience building backend services in Python
  • 3+ years of experience leading backend initiatives and mentoring other engineers
  • Strong experience designing and operating distributed, event-driven systems, and reasoning about failure, retries, idempotency, and eventual consistency
  • Depth with relational databases and an ORM (we use PostgreSQL, SQLAlchemy, and Alembic): schema design, migrations, and query performance
  • Experience designing and evolving APIs consumed by other teams and customers (we use GraphQL)
  • Hands-on experience with AWS and serverless building blocks (Lambda, EventBridge, SNS/SQS, DynamoDB, ECS)
  • Experience with infrastructure as code and CI/CD (we use Terraform, Docker, and GitHub Actions)
  • A real testing habit and fluency with a modern test stack (we use pytest, moto, and a containerized local stack for functional tests)
  • Ability to work seamlessly on a distributed software development team in an Agile/DevOps environment
  • Team player with a strong work ethic, eager to both help others and learn from them. You actively participate in discussions, accept constructive feedback, and pay attention to details. You take ownership of your work, and the team can count on you to give your best effort every day.
    • Good verbal and written communication skills. You can take a problem, break it down, propose one or more solutions, compare and contrast them, and plan a path to completion. You’re comfortable making architectural recommendations and can effectively bring your teammates on the journey with you.

Experience in the following areas is a bonus, but not required

      • Prior startup experience
      • Cloud Custodian, policy as code, or cloud security/compliance tooling
      • Multi-cloud work beyond AWS (Azure, GCP, Tencent Cloud)
      • Data-intensive work: analytical data stores and query engines (Athena, DuckDB, Parquet), ETL, and BI/semantic layers
      • Authentication and authorization at the platform level (SSO/OIDC/SAML, API keys, RBAC)
      • Building with LLMs (agent frameworks, retrieval, evaluation)
      • Open source software contributions
      • Frontend development experience (React, TypeScript, GraphQL)

        What you can expect

Here’s a little bit about us, so you know what to expect if you join us.

        • 100% remote - Slack and Google Meet for communication
        • Company laptop for development
        • Home office budget
        • Github and JIRA, lightweight agile process
        • Talented and experienced team, friendly culture
        • Equity compensation, excellent health benefits, generous time-off policy
