Overview:

We are seeking a Senior Site Reliability Engineer to join GitHub’s expanding IT Engineering team. This role is crucial for supporting our global workforce, known as Hubbers, who rely on our internal systems and services daily. You will be responsible for providing essential support, developing and maintaining internal tooling, and configuring systems to ensure Hubbers operate efficiently and without obstacles.  

  

We're looking for a Senior Site Reliability Engineer - IT/DevOps to help drive operational excellence and continuous improvement within IT Engineering. You have wide-range knowledge across multiple domains and will sit at the intersection between operations and software development. 

  

As a globally distributed company, GitHub relies on asynchronous communication. Therefore, strong communication skills and empathy are essential. Proficiency with Git and GitHub is also required.  

Responsibilities:
  • Operational excellence and continuous improvement through infrastructure automation, SaaS / Cloud integrations, and execution of Infrastructure as Code (IaC) methodologies.

  • Support on premise infrastructure, SaaS integrations, and cloud environments. 

  • Partner with the wider IT organization and to identify opportunities for automation and simplification. 

  • Create sustainable systems and services through automation and uplifts and ensure systems and services are production ready. 

  • Establish and maintain monitoring and infrastructure health dashboards and reporting.

  • Creating and maintaining runbooks and technical documentation. 

  • Provide escalation support for deployed software and IT services.

  • Participate in an incident management rotation. 

  • Effectively communicating technical information to internal customers and stakeholders.

Qualifications:

Required/Minimum Qualifications:

  • 6+ years experience in computer science, or related technical discipline with proven experience coding in relevant languages (e.g., Java, JavaScript, Python)
    • OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field AND 4+ years experience in computer science, or related technical discipline with proven experience coding in relevant languages (e.g., Java, JavaScript, Python) 
    • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related field AND 2+ years experience in computer science, or related technical discipline with proven experience coding in relevant languages (e.g., Java, JavaScript, Python)
    • OR equivalent experience. 
  • 3+ years’ experience managing Collaboration/SaaS applications at scale. 
  • 2+ years’ experience of network administration (e.g. routers, switches, and/or firewalls, etc.) 
  • 2+ years’ experience of client platform engineering (laptops and/or mobile devices) utilizing MDM frameworks (e.g. Jamf, Intune, etc.) 

Additional or Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2+ years’ deploying and managing applications in cloud environments such as AWS, Azure, or GCP; preferably Azure.
  • 2+ years’ experience with automation and tool development using GitHub, Python, Bash, Shell scripting, or PowerShell.  
  • Experience working closely with product management, design, and other engineering teams to collaborate and drive cross-functional projects and deliver high-quality products. 
  • Strong analytical and creative problem-solving skills.  
  • Strong infrastructure knowledge, including cloud computing, Kubernetes, and containerization.  
  • Strong soft skills, including stakeholder communication and cross-functional collaboration.
Compensation Range: The base salary range for this job is USD $103,200.00 - USD $273,700.00 /Yr.

These pay ranges are intended to cover roles based across the United States. An individual's base pay depends on various factors including geographical location and review of experience, knowledge, skills, abilities of the applicant. At GitHub certain roles are eligible for benefits and additional rewards, including annual bonus and stock. These rewards are allocated based on individual impact in role. In addition, certain roles also have the opportunity to earn sales incentives based on revenue or utilization, depending on the terms of the plan and the employee's role.

This position will be open for a minimum of 3 days, with applications accepted on an ongoing basis until the position is filled.
