Location & Schedule

This position requires regular on-site presence in the Council Office Monday – Wednesday and working remotely in the community on Thursday and Friday. The role will also require working beyond standard business hours, including nights and weekends, depending on office needs and community events.

Who We Are & What You’ll Do

The Office of Council member Amanda Sawyer is seeking a City Council Aide to support the constituent, policy, and community impact work across Council District 5. This individual is a self-starter with an inherent high work ethic. The desired candidate should be capable of maintaining a positive attitude in a high pressure, confidentiality-sensitive and fast-paced, politically charged environment.

District 5 is the East Central Denver geographical area. Its borders generally include East Colfax Avenue to the north, Downing Street to the west, the Aurora City border to the east, and Leetsdale Avenue to the south. Denver’s District 5 Council Office represents many unique statistical neighborhoods, such as Cherry Creek, Country Club, Hale, Hilltop, Lowry, Montclair, Washington Virginia Vale, and Windsor.

Specifically, as a City Council Aide, you will:

  • Assist in a variety of constituent services such as answering questions, complaints, concerns, and requests in a timely and professional manner

  • Assist in distribution or delivery of marketing/informational materials

  • Work directly and develop relationships with the community

  • Write competently in a variety of styles to communicate agendas, briefs, summaries for notifications and a variety of events/meetings

  • Facilitate advance efforts and coordinate logistics for the Councilmember’s schedule and community engagements/commitments 

  • Attend external meetings, public meetings, and project team meetings

  • Request and collect briefs and agendas for speaking & event preparations & meetings

  • Identify issues and solutions particularly in advocating for district programs, policy, and legislation

  • Calendar management

  • Special event planning and execution

  • Draft formal and official language on behalf of the office

  • Work with racially, linguistically, and socioeconomically diverse populations

  • Perform other duties and administrative activities as assigned

What You’ll Bring

To be successful in this role, our candidate will have excellent interpersonal communications skills, exceptional attention to detail, and be a self-starter with a high work ethic. The ideal candidate is either familiar with or has a desire to learn how to navigate municipal government departments and agencies while remaining well-informed of current council and community activity. This position requires a solid rapport with the district team, and developing familiarity with district constituents, community members, and area stakeholders.

Our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics:

  • Strong organizational skills with managing deadlines and projects

  • Ability to work off-site and after hours

  • Experience using one or more of the following:

    • Microsoft Office Suite

    • Constant Contact

    • Adobe Creative Suite or other design software

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Education requirement: Bachelor's Degree.

  • Experience Requirement: Two (2) years of years of public sector experience or similar professional experience that included office administration, constituent services, community outreach, public relations, or communications.

  • Education/Experience Equivalency: One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post-high school education. A combination of appropriate education and experience may be substituted for the minimum education and experience requirements.
