About the Role

We're looking for a Legal Document Automation Developer to join our team of document automation experts working on NetLaw's legal product.

In this role, you'll build and maintain automated legal document templates—including wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and other estate planning instruments—using sophisticated conditional logic to transform complex legal language into intelligent, dynamic documents.

Important: This is not a general legal assistant, paralegal, or software engineering role. We are specifically seeking professionals who have personally built automated legal document templates using document automation platforms. Experience preparing legal documents alone is not sufficient.

This is meticulous, high-stakes work. The documents you automate are legally binding instruments that protect families and their legacies. A misplaced clause, a broken condition, or an incorrect variable isn't a minor bug — it's a real-world consequence. You'll thrive here if you find deep satisfaction in getting every detail exactly right.

Success in this role depends on experience—not just familiarity—with legal document automation. We are looking for candidates who have personally built and maintained production templates containing sophisticated conditional logic, tested numerous client scenarios, debugged template behavior, and worked closely with attorneys to translate legal requirements into reliable automated documents. If your experience is limited to preparing legal documents or using document automation software as an end user, this position is unlikely to be the right fit.

What You'll Do

• Build, test, and maintain automated document templates using conditional logic to handle complex legal scenarios and jurisdiction-specific variations
• Diagnose and resolve logic errors that appear only under specific combinations of client inputs.
• Investigate unexpected document outputs and trace issues back to template logic.
• Own template quality from initial development through testing, deployment, maintenance, and ongoing enhancements.
• Translate attorney-drafted legal language and specifications into dynamic, logic-driven templates
• Write and maintain template logic using IF/ELSE conditions, variables, loops, calculations, and reusable components to generate legally accurate documents across hundreds of client scenarios.
• Rigorously test document outputs across a wide range of input combinations to verify that every conditional path produces accurate, compliant documents
• Collaborate with attorneys, product managers, and engineers to clarify requirements — and proactively ask questions when specifications are ambiguous or incomplete
• Document your work clearly so templates remain maintainable as the product evolves
• Continuously learn new tools, automation platforms, and estate planning concepts as our product grows
• Maintain production templates that generate thousands of estate planning documents annually across all 50 states.

What We're Looking For

Minimum qualifications are strictly required:

• Direct experience designing, building, and maintaining production document automation templates used by attorneys or clients.
• Experience with conditional logic
• Experience systematically testing generated document output across multiple client scenarios and edge cases.

Candidates without this experience will not be considered.

Required Experience & Skills

• 2–4 years of hands-on experience in legal document automation — building templates with conditional logic in platforms such as Contract Express, HotDocs, Gavel, Pathagoras, XpressDox, or another enterprise document automation platform.
• Experience troubleshooting template logic involving nested conditions, repeating data, variables, calculations, and jurisdiction-specific document variations.
• Working proficiency reading and writing JavaScript to support template logic, automation, and debugging.
• Experience working with legal documents and legal language, with a strong grasp of why precision matters in a highly regulated field
• Demonstrated ability to identify and resolve subtle logic, formatting, or conditional-path defects before release.
• Ability to work independently, manage your own workload, and deliver reliably in a remote environment
• Experience maintaining shared template libraries or collaborating through version-controlled workflows is a plus.
• A fast learner's mindset: comfortable picking up new tools, concepts, and legal subject matter quickly
• Strong communication skills and the judgment to ask clarifying questions early rather than guessing when something is confusing or underspecified

Preferred

• Exposure to estate planning documents and concepts — wills, revocable trusts, powers of attorney, healthcare directives, and related instruments
• Background as a paralegal, legal assistant, or legal technologist

Qualified candidates will complete a brief practical exercise focused on legal document automation and conditional logic. The exercise reflects the type of work performed in this role and is intended to evaluate real-world problem-solving rather than memorized interview questions.

The practical exercise is designed around the types of problems you'll solve in this role. No estate planning expertise is required beyond the experience outlined in this posting.
