Job description

Commercial Litigation Associate – Remote MI/OH

Location: Michigan or Ohio
Work Arrangement: Fully Remote
Employment Type: Full-Time
Salary: $180,000–$230,000
Experience: 3–7 years of commercial litigation experience
Visa Sponsorship: Not available

About the Role

A large national law firm is seeking a Commercial Litigation Associate with 3–7 years of experience to join a growing, partner-led practice supporting clients across Michigan and Ohio.

This is a fully remote, partner-track opportunity at a firm with a long-established virtual work model and a strong commitment to maintaining remote flexibility. The firm offers a collegial culture, long-term career planning, and a well-developed remote infrastructure with dedicated support staff and resources.

The ideal candidate will bring a strong commercial litigation background, the ability to manage matters with significant autonomy, and the self-direction needed to succeed in a fully remote environment.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Handle all phases of complex commercial litigation with a high degree of autonomy.

  • Conduct factual investigations.

  • Manage discovery.

  • Prepare pleadings and motions.

  • Take and defend depositions.

  • Engage in settlement negotiations.

  • Communicate directly with clients.

  • Support and help grow a partner-led practice serving clients in the technology, manufacturing, and transportation sectors.

  • Handle labor and employment litigation matters as a secondary focus.

Key Requirements

  • 3–7 years of commercial litigation experience, with approximately 4–6 years preferred.

  • Strong commercial litigation experience across multiple phases of a matter, including discovery, motions, depositions, and settlement negotiations.

  • Current experience at a reputable law firm, ideally a mid-size or large firm.

  • J.D. with solid academic credentials.

  • Must currently reside in Michigan or Ohio.

  • Must hold an active bar license in the state where you reside.

  • Strong preference for candidates barred in both Michigan and Ohio.

  • Pure commercial litigation experience is strongly preferred over a primarily niche environmental or regulatory practice.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage cases with a high degree of autonomy.

  • Self-directed, proactive, and comfortable working with minimal in-person oversight.

  • Ability to work Eastern Time hours.

Preferred Background

  • Labor and employment litigation experience.

  • Experience at a reputable regional, national, or AmLaw firm.

  • Experience handling commercial litigation matters from investigation through discovery, depositions, motions, and settlement.

  • Direct client communication experience.

  • Dual Michigan and Ohio bar admission.

Why This Opportunity

This is a true partner-track associate role with a long-term growth path and a 1,900-hour billable target.

The firm has an established fully remote infrastructure, including dedicated paralegals, legal assistants, support staff, office equipment, and other resources designed specifically for remote attorneys.

The culture is intentionally collegial and team-oriented, with a strong emphasis on professionalism and collaboration. The firm is open to attorneys coming from larger firms who value long-term career growth, remote flexibility, and culture over maximizing compensation alone.

Compensation & Benefits

Base salary generally ranges from $180,000–$225,000, depending on experience and market, with total compensation potentially reaching approximately $230,000 or higher depending on market, seniority, and performance.

Additional compensation includes:

  • Associate Performance Bonus, approximately 6–7% of base salary

  • Client Development Bonus

  • Medical, dental, and vision benefits

  • 401(k)

Compensation varies based on experience level and market within Michigan or Ohio.

Work Arrangement

This is a fully remote position, but candidates must currently reside in Michigan or Ohio and maintain active bar admission in their state of residence.

Candidates must be able to work Eastern Time hours.

Visa sponsorship is not available.
