Job description

Want to help us help others? We’re hiring!

GoFundMe is the world’s most powerful community for good, dedicated to helping people help each other. By uniting individuals and nonprofits in one place, GoFundMe makes it easy and safe for people to ask for help and support causes—for themselves and each other. Together, our community has raised more than $40 billion since 2010.

Trust is at the core of everything we do. As part of the Trust & Safety organization, our Transaction Monitoring team helps protect millions of donors, organizers, and beneficiaries by identifying suspicious activity, preventing financial crime, and ensuring compliance with global AML/CTF regulations.

Join us! The GoFundMe team is searching for our next Lead Analyst, Transaction Monitoring to conduct complex investigations into transactions, fundraisers, donors, and customers, identify suspicious activity, and support GoFundMe's global financial crime program.

The Job

  • Investigate complex money laundering, terrorist financing, and other financial crime typologies by analyzing customer behavior, transaction activity, payment instruments, devices, and account relationships.
  • Analyze transactions using internal systems, payment processor tools, and analytical platforms to detect financial crime indicators.
  • Analyze large and complex datasets to identify emerging financial crime trends, coordinated activity, and opportunities to improve transaction monitoring controls.
  • Lead investigations into complex donations, fundraisers, organizers, beneficiaries, and donors to identify suspicious, unusual, or potentially high-risk activity.
  • Assess whether suspicious activity should be escalated internally in accordance with GoFundMe's AML/CTF procedures, or whether it can be reasonably explained and mitigated.
  • Review investigations completed by Transaction Monitoring Analysts to ensure they meet quality, documentation, and regulatory standards.
  • Provide coaching, mentorship, and day-to-day guidance to Transaction Monitoring Analysts, supporting their technical development and investigation quality.
  • Deliver constructive feedback on investigations and identify knowledge gaps or training opportunities across the team.
  • Drive the development and continuous improvement of transaction monitoring rules, operational procedures, typologies, documentation standards, and quality frameworks.
  • Prepare clear, factual, and comprehensive investigation documentation suitable for internal review, audit, and regulatory reporting.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to investigate and mitigate financial crime risks.
  • Stay informed on emerging financial crime trends, regulatory developments, and industry best practices to support GoFundMe's global compliance program.
  • Assist with audits, regulatory reviews, internal reporting, and strategic initiatives relating to transaction monitoring and financial crime prevention.
  • Lead or co-lead cross-functional initiatives in partnership with Product, Legal, Compliance, or Trust & Safety teams.
  • Serve as a trusted liaison for cross-functional stakeholders, adapting communication style to influence and advise on complex matters.

This position may involve reviewing sensitive material, which can include disturbing images, videos, or text, as well as offensive language and other challenging content (e.g., violence, exploitation, or self-injury). Some weekend and holiday work may be required as part of scheduled shifts, as well as being a member of our on-call team for emergencies.

You

  • 6+ years of experience in financial crime investigations, transaction monitoring, or payments risk.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Strong proficiency in data analysis tools (e.g. Looker, SQL, Excel) and transaction monitoring systems.
  • Strong understanding of AML and ATF legislation and regulatory expectations.
  • Experience conducting complex investigations involving money laundering, terrorist financing, fraud, or organized financial crime.
  • Experience reviewing investigations, providing quality assurance, coaching teammates, or acting as a subject matter expert.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with the ability to identify complex behavioral patterns across multiple data sources.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present findings clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong ethical standards and discretion when handling sensitive information.
  • Uncommon ability to anticipate, adapt, and respond to sensitive and evolving situations while balancing numerous, often competing, priorities.
  • Familiarity with machine learning or AI-driven tools for fraud detection and their attendant regulations.
  • Strong alignment with GoFundMe’s core values: impatient to be great, find a way, earn trust every day, fueled by purpose.

Preferred (Optional):

  • Professional certifications such as CAMS (Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist) or equivalent.
