Job description

Meridio is a remote-first company on a mission to make health benefits simple, affordable, and accessible for small businesses. We’re growing quickly and looking for an insurance leader who knows how to navigate complexity, build strong partnerships, and keep the experience simple for our customers.

As our Director of Insurance, you’ll shape our insurance strategy, manage carrier and vendor relationships, and serve as a trusted advisor to our Sales, Client Success, and Product teams. You’ll be the bridge between insurance complexity and customer simplicity—making sure we offer the right products, keep costs competitive, and maintain strong, scalable compliance.

You’ll report directly to our Chief Product Officer.

If you love turning insurance puzzles into clear, practical solutions, you’ll fit right in.

What You’ll Do

Lead Insurance Strategy

  • Design and execute Meridio’s insurance product roadmap.

  • Negotiate with carriers to secure competitive rates and terms.

  • Build strong relationships with carriers, TPAs, and other partners.

Drive Customer Innovation & Advocacy

  • Educate and empower our team to help clients make strategic decisions.

  • Mentor internal teams on insurance best practices.

  • Partner with Sales, Client Success, and Product to simplify the customer experience and strengthen client outcomes.

Ensure Rock-Solid Compliance

  • Stay ahead of ACA, ERISA, and state and federal regulations.

  • Create scalable processes that ensure compliance without slowing us down.

  • Lead audits, manage regulatory filings, and oversee licensing renewals for Meridio and our licensed guides.

  • Contribute to Meridio’s broader compliance and risk management efforts as the company grows.

What Success Looks Like in Your First 12 Months

  • Revamp and expand Meridio’s insurance lines during the first half of 2027.

  • Improve benefit value by at least 15% across our products.

  • Maintain 100% compliance with filings, audits, and licensing renewals.

  • Earn positive feedback from clients on insurance guidance and education.

About You

You’re someone who:

  • Gets excited about making insurance simple.

  • Sees regulations as puzzles to solve, not obstacles to avoid.

  • Believes small businesses deserve access to the same quality benefits as larger companies.

  • Builds trust easily with clients, carriers, and vendors.

  • Knows when to push carriers and when to collaborate.

  • Can explain complex topics like stop-loss insurance in plain English.

  • Thrives in a fast-moving, remote environment.

  • Is comfortable rolling up your sleeves and building processes from the ground up.

What You Bring

  • 7–10 years of experience in health insurance or employee benefits.

  • Deep knowledge of group health plans and regulations.

  • Experience negotiating with carriers and TPAs.

  • A track record of launching and scaling insurance products.

  • A strong understanding of ACA, ERISA, and state insurance laws.

  • Strong cross-functional leadership and communication skills.

  • The ability to translate “insurance-speak” into language anyone can understand.

Bonus Points For

  • Experience with level-funded, self-funded, or captive health plans.

  • Knowledge of reimbursement arrangements.

  • An active insurance broker license.

  • An actuarial background.

  • Experience at a benefits or insurtech startup.

  • An MBA or other relevant graduate degree.

Benefits & Perks

  • Stock options.

  • Employer-paid health benefits through Meridio.

  • 401(k).

  • Discretionary time off.

  • A remote-first culture with annual in-person offsites.

Why You’ll Love Working Here

  • Impact you can see: Your work directly helps small businesses access better health benefits for their teams.

  • A team that has your back: We’re collaborative, supportive, and committed to each other’s success.

  • Room to grow: As we scale, so will your opportunities to take on new challenges and leadership responsibilities.

  • Flexibility: Enjoy the freedom of our remote-first culture, with in-person gatherings that help us stay connected.
