Job description

Brand Copywriter (Part-Time, Freelance)

About the role

Mozilla Foundation works on some of the hardest questions in tech: how AI gets built and governed, who the internet serves, and what a healthier digital world actually looks like. The thinking behind that work is rigorous. It draws on research, policy analysis, and years of expertise. The problem is that rigorous thinking often stays locked inside reports and briefings, written for people who already agree with us.

We're looking for a copywriter who can unlock it. Someone who can take a dense idea, understand it properly, and rewrite it so a curious person with no background in what we do, gets it in one read. It shouldn’t be dumbed down or stripped of nuance, just super clear. This is a part-time freelance role reporting into the marketing team, focused on campaign and marketing copy.

Please note: This is an independent contractor opportunity and is not an employment position with Mozilla Foundation.

What you'll do

  • Write campaign copy across channels: web pages, email, social, video scripts, and paid placements
  • Work with researchers, fellows, and program leads to translate their work into copy that holds up to their scrutiny and lands with a general audience
  • Take briefs from concept to final copy, including headlines, taglines, and CTAs
  • Adapt one core idea into many formats without the message drifting
  • Protect the integrity of the source material. If a simplification changes the meaning, you flag it and find another way in
  • Keep our voice consistent across campaigns while giving each one room to feel distinct

What we're looking for

  • 5+ years writing brand or campaign copy, ideally some of it for mission-driven organizations, research institutions, or brands dealing in complex subject matter
  • Proof that you can do the hard version of simplifying: a portfolio piece where the source material was technical or academic and the output was genuinely readable
  • Comfort interviewing subject-matter experts and pushing back when the jargon creeps in
  • Strong editing instincts. You know the difference between shorter and clearer
  • Self-directed. You can run with a brief, manage your own hours, and hit deadlines without hand-holding
  • Interest in the issues we work on: AI accountability, privacy, open internet. You don't need to be an expert but being interested helps!

Nice to have

  • Experience in advocacy, campaigning, or public-interest communications
  • Familiarity with SEO and performance copy basics
  • Experience writing for global audiences
  • Experience writing exec communications

Engagement Details

  • Engagement Type: Freelance contract, part-time
  • Commitment: Approximately 10-15 hours per week (to begin)
  • Location: Remote
  • Term: Initial 3-month engagement
  • Rate: Competitive day rate, based on experience

How to apply:

Please submit the following:

  • Three writing samples that demonstrate your range as a copywriter. These must be existing pieces, such as published work. You may either attach them as documents or share links to them. Provision is made for both options in the application fields.
  • A short note about the hardest idea you have ever had to make simple. Please make sure your response addresses the following:
    • What made the idea difficult to explain?
    • How did you approach the work and decide what to simplify, emphasize, or leave out?
    • What was the final result, and what (if anything) you’d do differently now?

We’re not just interested in the finished product, but also in how you think, make creative choices, and translate complex ideas into clear and compelling language.
If your example relates to one of the writing samples you are submitting, please indicate which one.

We're excited to see your creativity and learn how you'd help bring Mozilla Foundation's mission to life.
