Job description

What You'll Do:

Avalara's Content Engineering platform powers compliance content that helps customers manage complex obligations across jurisdictions and products. You'll modernize the content lifecycle by building scalable, cloud-native systems and AI agents that automate content sourcing, understanding, and management at scale.

You'll also build the orchestration layer powering Content Studio. This layer enables autonomous workflows across MCP servers, AI agents, APIs, microservices, and frontend applications.

These workflows create a faster, more reliable, low-touch content ecosystem. You will report to the Sr. Manager, Software Engineering.

What Your Responsibilities Will Be:
  • You'll build intelligent AI agents and orchestration layers to automate end-to-end compliance content workflows.
  • You'll develop scalable, cloud-native platforms, distributed systems, APIs, and reusable services for new content types.
  • You'll build React interfaces with generative AI capabilities for recommendations, updates, conflict resolution, and human-in-the-loop workflows.
  • You'll improve architecture and engineering practices that improve scalability, reliability, observability, and operational efficiency.
  • You'll establish CI/CD, testing, deployment, monitoring, and AI evaluation practices for production systems.
  • You'll partner with engineering, infrastructure, product, and data teams to deliver measurable outcomes.
  • You'll mentor engineers, provide technical leadership, and lead responsible AI adoption.
  • You'll create reusable engineering patterns and operating practices that improve delivery speed, quality, scalability, and growth.
What You'll Need to be Successful:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.

  • 6+ years of software engineering experience building scalable, production-grade full-stack systems, including backend services/APIs and modern frontend applications.

  • Experience with distributed systems, system architecture, event-driven architectures, and cloud-native development.

  • Proficiency in C#, Java, or Python and React, with experience building responsive, interactive UIs.

  • Experience with generative AI features and agentic/autonomous workflows that detect, decide, and act with minimal human input.

  • Hands-on experience with CI/CD, DevOps, AWS/cloud environments, and deploying, monitoring, and scaling services.

  • Experience with Postgres and containerization technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.

  • Understanding of secure software development, including least privilege, data protection, and secure coding practices.
