2D Technical Director

About us: 

We are a creative entertainment company based in Sydney. We make IP-driven products that fans love, spanning animation, consumer products, publishing, games and licensing. Role Information: 

Our 2D division is expanding, and we are investing in its technical capability to match the scale and ambition of our work. This is a newly created senior role, and you will be the technical owner for our 2D pipeline. You will define and lead the pipeline, tooling and best practice for 2D production, with real autonomy and high-impact work from day one. As the division grows, you will shape and build the team around you. 

What you will ow:

The 2D pipeline. You are the technical owner for everything 2D: tooling, workflow optimization, pipeline integration, and the standards that govern them. 

The backlog. Concrete work is already waiting, including scene setup automation, animatic import tooling, and version management integration with our production tracking. You'll clear it, with new requests flowing to you through our production planning team.

The foundation. The tools, conventions, and architecture you establish now are what the future 2D tech team inherits. You'll set them up to be scaled, documented, and maintainable.

Your duties will include:

• Design, build, and maintain pipeline tools for the 2D team, primarily around Toon Boom Harmony
• Integrate 2D workflows with Autodesk Flow (formerly ShotGrid) and the wider studio pipeline
• Automate repetitive setup, import, and versioning tasks that currently cost artists hours
• Work with 2D artists, leads, and production planning to translate pain points into tooling
• Support and troubleshoot 2D-specific technical issues
• Document tools and establish workflow conventions the team can rely on
• Collaborate with the 3D TDs and wider tech team on shared pipeline standards

Success in year one looks like:

• The existing backlog of 2D tooling requests is cleared
• 2D artists have working, documented tools for scene setup, imports, and version management
• 2D technical issues are handled by a specialist rather than absorbed reactively by general IT
• Tooling requests flow smoothly through production planning and get delivered reliably
• The pipeline foundation is ready for mid-level devs to build on as the team grows

Who we are looking for: 

You are a senior pipeline developer with genuine 2D expertise. You've built tools for Toon Boom Harmony or comparable 2D animation software, and you understand the difference between scripting around a problem and building durable pipeline infrastructure.

You're self-directed on the technical side. There's no existing 2D tech team to slot into, so you'll own technical decisions end to end, supported by a production planning structure that keeps requests and priorities clear.

Essential skills and experience:

• Strong QT script (Javascript) and  Python development skills in an animation pipeline context
• Hands-on experience building tools for Toon Boom Harmony or equivalent 2D animation software
• Proven ability to work with artists and production staff to translate needs into working tools
• Comfort owning technical decisions as the sole TD in a domain, working within a structured production planning process
• Experience with production tracking integration, ideally ShotGrid

Bonus skills:

• Experience as a TD or pipeline developer in a 2D animation studio
• Familiarity with Storyboard Pro and animatic workflows
• Experience mentoring or leading junior developers
• Exposure to broader studio pipelines (3D, compositing, editorial) and how 2D fits into them
