Position Overview

 

This role is responsible for defining, prioritizing, and delivering APIs and integration capabilities that enable customers and third-party solution providers (Partners) to connect with our product suite. You will work at the intersection of customer needs, partner requirements, platform strategy, and engineering execution to create scalable, secure, and highly usable integration solutions.

You will partner with Product and Engineering teams across the organization, along with Support, Sales, and external technology partners, to identify high-value integration scenarios, define API requirements, and deliver secure, scalable capabilities that power customer and partner solutions. Success in this role requires aligning platform strategy with the needs of customers and partners who rely on Paylocity APIs to build, maintain, and scale their integrations.

The ideal candidate brings strong technical fluency, excellent stakeholder management skills, and a proven track record delivering API-first products, integration platforms, or extensibility solutions within B2B SaaS environments.

Experience building products that serve multiple audiences, including external developers, customer technical teams, business stakeholders, implementation partners, and internal operational teams, is highly desirable.

  • Define and execute the product vision, strategy, and roadmap for external APIs and integration capabilities that enable customers and partners to connect with and extend the value of the Paylocity platform.  
  • Partner with internal product teams, customers, and technology partners to identify high-value integration opportunities and prioritize platform investments that drive business and customer outcomes.  
  • Collaborate with Engineering and Architecture teams to translate business needs into secure, scalable, reliable, and reusable API solutions.  
  • Own and manage the lifecycle of API products and integration capabilities for your assigned business categories, from opportunity assessment and requirements definition through launch, adoption, enhancement, and retirement.  
  • Drive ecosystem growth by enabling customers and partners to build solutions that increase the value, reach, and adoption of the Paylocity platform.  
  • Work closely with stakeholders across Product, Engineering, Support, Sales, Partner Management, and Customer Success to ensure alignment on priorities, requirements, and delivery expectations.  
  • Gather, validate, and prioritize customer, partner, and internal stakeholder requirements, balancing strategic objectives, customer value, technical feasibility, and operational considerations.  
  • Develop business cases and product requirements for new API and integration initiatives, ensuring alignment with customer needs, market opportunities, and company strategy.  
  • Define product requirements, success metrics, and acceptance criteria that enable engineering teams to deliver high-quality solutions.  
  • Manage and prioritize the product backlog, ensuring development efforts are aligned with business goals and customer needs.  
  • Lead cross-functional planning and execution activities, proactively identifying dependencies, risks, and obstacles that may impact delivery.  
  • Establish and monitor key performance indicators for API usage, partner adoption, ecosystem growth, reliability, and customer satisfaction.  
  • Use qualitative and quantitative data to evaluate product performance, identify opportunities for improvement, and inform roadmap decisions.  
  • Partner with Engineering and Developer Experience teams to ensure APIs are intuitive, discoverable, well-documented, and supported with appropriate onboarding and implementation guidance.  
  • Coordinate successful launches of new API and integration capabilities, including communication, enablement, and adoption planning.  
  • Collaborate with Sales, Marketing, Customer Success, and Partner teams to support go-to-market initiatives, technology partnerships, and ecosystem growth efforts.  
  • Communicate product strategy, roadmap priorities, delivery progress, and business impact to stakeholders and leadership.  
  • Monitor industry trends, customer expectations, integration technologies, and competitive offerings to inform product strategy and investment decisions.  
  • Champion a customer-centric, data-driven approach to product management that balances innovation, usability, operational excellence, and measurable business outcomes.  
  • Foster strong collaboration across teams, helping create alignment, accountability, and a shared commitment to delivering exceptional customer and partner experiences.  
  • Support the growth and development of product management best practices while helping cultivate a culture of continuous improvement and outcome-oriented decision-making.

Education and Experience 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, Business, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience. 
  • 8+ years of experience in product management, with a proven track record of defining, delivering, and scaling technical products in a SaaS environment. 
  • Strong understanding of API design principles, RESTful services, webhooks, authentication and authorization models (OAuth, SSO, API keys), and modern integration patterns. 
  • Experience owning APIs, integrations, platform products, developer-facing products, or other technical product domains. 
  • Proven experience as a technical Product Manager or Product Owner, with the ability to effectively partner with engineering teams and design for the unique needs and behaviors of developer personas. 
  • Strong business acumen, with the ability to relate product metrics to business outcomes. 
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills. 
  • Experience managing competing priorities and aligning multiple areas of the business around common goals. 
  • Demonstrated ability to influence senior leaders and secure buy-in for product strategies. 
  • Experience reporting progress in business reviews and identifying necessary adjustments based on data insights. 
  • Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability to change, and a willingness to learn in a fast-paced environment. 
  • A strong sense of curiosity, with a passion for innovation, continuous learning, and staying ahead of industry trends.

Preferred 

  • Experience working with third-party technology partners, ISVs, or software integration ecosystems. 
  • Familiarity with API management platforms, developer portals, SDKs, event-driven architectures, and integration middleware solutions. 
  • Experience defining API governance, versioning, lifecycle management, and platform adoption strategies. 
  • Experience with enterprise SaaS products and complex B2B customer environments. 
  • Technical background in software development, solutions architecture, implementation consulting, or technical product management. 

Physical requirements

• Ability to sit for extended periods: The role requires sitting at a desk or workstation for long periods, typically 7-8 hours a day.

• Use of computer and phone systems: The employee must be able to operate a computer, use phone systems, and type. This includes using multiple software programs and inquiries simultaneously.
