Senior Full Stack Developer / Platform Engineer – PBBA

Client: Internal Revenue Service (IRS)
Program: Common API Services (CAS)

Work Arrangement: Primarily Remote / occasional on-site support

Candidate Pay Range: $70.18–$72.93/hour

Position Summary

SMX Services & Consulting, Inc. is seeking a Senior Full Stack Developer / Platform Engineer – PBBA to support modernization and sustainment of IRS PBBA applications.

The position requires hands-on Java/Spring Boot backend development combined with modern frontend-development expertise, Linux/OpenShift experience, containerization, application migration, and enterprise integration capabilities.

The selected candidate will help migrate applications from legacy or virtual-machine-based environments to modern, containerized OpenShift-aligned architectures while maintaining existing business functionality and external interfaces.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of relevant full-stack application-development experience.

  • Java/J2EE.

  • Spring Boot.

  • ReactJS or comparable modern JavaScript framework.

  • Full-stack web application development.

  • JDK 17 or newer.

  • REST APIs.

  • SOAP web services.

  • Single Sign-On integration.

  • Application dependency management.

  • Application dependency remediation.

  • Red Hat OpenShift.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain Java/Spring Boot applications.

  • Develop and maintain ReactJS or comparable frontend applications.

  • Perform full-stack application development.

  • Upgrade applications to current Java/JDK versions.

  • Support JDK 17+ application compatibility.

  • Integrate applications with Single Sign-On services.

  • Remediate software libraries and application dependencies.

  • Modernize applications operating in RHEL/Linux environments.

  • Containerize applications.

  • Prepare applications for Red Hat OpenShift deployment.

  • Develop application deployment-configuration inputs.

  • Develop and maintain REST integrations.

  • Develop and maintain SOAP integrations.

  • Troubleshoot database-connected applications.

  • Conduct developer-level regression validation.

  • Conduct application smoke validation.

  • Troubleshoot and correct UI defects.

  • Troubleshoot and correct functional defects.

  • Support application vulnerability remediation.

  • Prepare application releases.

  • Develop rollback and recovery inputs.

  • Maintain as-built documentation.

  • Support migration from virtual-machine-based hosting to containerized platforms.

  • Preserve existing functionality and external interfaces throughout modernization.

  • Support technical knowledge transfer.

Preferred Experience

  • Enterprise application modernization.

Location Requirement

The position is primarily remote within the United States.

On-site support may be required for deployments, technical meetings, modernization activities, troubleshooting, releases, cutovers, or knowledge transfer.

Citizenship and Security

Candidate must be able to satisfy applicable IRS suitability, background investigation, PIV/SmartID, security training, Government system-access, and protected-information handling requirements.

No Secret or Top Secret clearance requirement has been identified.

Compensation

Candidate Pay Range: $70.18–$72.93/hour

Final compensation depends on experience, technical qualifications, employment classification, and final SMX approval.

Position is contingent upon contract award.
