Job description

The Senior Citrix Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, administering, maintaining, and supporting on-premises Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops environments across multiple client environments.

This role serves as the technical owner and senior escalation point for Citrix technologies, ensuring the stability, security, performance, and availability of client virtual application and desktop environments. The Senior Citrix Engineer will also serve as the technical authority for Citrix change management, standards, audits, and continuous improvement initiatives.

The role requires strong hands-on expertise in Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops (CVAD), Citrix ADC/NetScaler, StoreFront, Machine Creation Services (MCS), Citrix Profile Management, FSLogix, and virtualization technologies.

The Senior Citrix Engineer will work closely with Solutions Engineers, project teams, and client stakeholders during infrastructure deployments, onboarding, migrations, upgrades, and complex technical escalations. The role will also contribute to the development and optimization of Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) environments as a complementary desktop virtualization platform.

Key Responsibilities

1. Citrix Infrastructure Administration

  • Design, deploy, configure, maintain, and support on-premises Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops (CVAD) environments across multiple client sites.
  • Administer the complete Citrix infrastructure stack, including:
    • Citrix Delivery Controllers
    • Citrix Studio
    • Citrix StoreFront
    • Citrix License Servers
    • Citrix site SQL databases
    • Citrix Director and monitoring components
  • Manage and oversee Citrix licensing.
  • Maintain Citrix Workspace applications and related Citrix technologies across client environments.
  • Monitor Citrix infrastructure availability, capacity, and performance.
  • Optimize HDX and session settings to maintain a reliable and high-quality end-user experience.

2. Citrix ADC / NetScaler Administration

  • Engineer, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot Citrix ADC/NetScaler environments.
  • Manage Citrix Gateway configurations for secure remote access.
  • Configure and maintain:
    • Load balancing
    • SSL offloading
    • Content switching
    • Gateway services
  • Monitor and maintain ADC firmware and configurations.
  • Utilize Citrix ADM for centralized management and firmware management where applicable.
  • Evaluate additional ADC capabilities and use cases that may improve client environments.

3. Image & Provisioning Management

  • Design and maintain Citrix provisioning strategies using Machine Creation Services (MCS).
  • Build, maintain, and optimize master/golden images.
  • Manage image updates and deployments while minimizing disruption to users.
  • Maintain consistent image standards across client environments.
  • Plan and execute image and provisioning changes in accordance with established change management procedures.

4. User Profile Management

  • Implement and maintain Citrix Profile Management and/or FSLogix.
  • Troubleshoot profile-related issues affecting application and desktop performance.
  • Optimize profile configurations to improve login times and overall user experience.
  • Support FSLogix-based profile solutions within Citrix and Azure Virtual Desktop environments.

5. Citrix Upgrades & Migrations

  • Plan and execute Citrix version upgrades, migrations, and infrastructure changes.
  • Assess potential risks and dependencies before performing upgrades.
  • Coordinate changes with internal teams and client stakeholders.
  • Ensure upgrades and migrations preserve system stability and minimize impact to users.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation before, during, and after major changes.

6. Azure Virtual Desktop

  • Support and optimize Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) environments.
  • Configure and manage:
    • AVD host pools
    • Session hosts
    • FSLogix profiles
    • User access
    • Application delivery
  • Identify opportunities to transition or complement existing Citrix workloads with AVD.
  • Partner with other engineers to determine which components of existing Citrix environments can be incorporated into AVD solutions.

7. Troubleshooting & Technical Support

  • Serve as the senior escalation point for complex Citrix and virtualization issues.
  • Troubleshoot issues involving:
    • Citrix sessions
    • Published applications
    • Virtual desktops
    • StoreFront
    • Delivery Controllers
    • Citrix Gateway
    • NetScaler/ADC
    • MCS
    • User profiles
    • FSLogix
    • HDX
    • Authentication
    • Performance and availability
  • Perform root-cause analysis and implement permanent solutions where possible.
  • Take ownership of escalated incidents and coordinate with other technical teams when required.
  • Provide technical guidance to engineers supporting Citrix environments.

8. Security & Compliance

  • Implement and maintain security best practices across Citrix environments.
  • Review Citrix infrastructure for security vulnerabilities and configuration weaknesses.
  • Ensure Citrix Gateway, ADC, StoreFront, and virtual desktop environments follow established security standards.
  • Monitor Citrix-related changes to Microsoft applications, Teams, Windows, and other dependencies that may impact the environment.
  • Recommend improvements to strengthen security, reliability, and compliance.

9. Automation & PowerShell

  • Develop and maintain PowerShell scripts to automate Citrix administration and deployment tasks.
  • Utilize Citrix SDK and automation capabilities where appropriate.
  • Automate repetitive administrative tasks to improve operational efficiency and consistency.
  • Maintain documentation for scripts and automated processes.

10. Change Management & Technical Governance

  • Serve as the Change Control Manager/technical authority for Citrix environments.
  • Review, approve, coordinate, and oversee Citrix-related changes.
  • Develop and maintain a standardized Citrix Change Catalog for repeatable administrative changes.
  • Ensure changes are properly planned, documented, tested, and communicated.
  • Monitor Citrix environmental changes and ensure they are performed through approved processes.
  • Conduct structured audits of client Citrix environments and identify areas requiring remediation or stabilization.
  • Define and track ongoing maintenance requirements for each client environment.

11. Project & Client Onboarding Support

  • Participate in project implementation reviews and technical design reviews.
  • Collaborate with Solutions Engineers during client onboarding and infrastructure deployments.
  • Provide Citrix expertise during project planning, implementation, and transition activities.
  • Review Citrix-related projects to ensure they remain aligned with established technical standards.
  • Assist in researching and developing new Citrix and AVD solutions.
  • Communicate technical changes, risks, and recommendations to relevant stakeholders.

12. Documentation & Service Management

  • Maintain accurate and detailed documentation of Citrix architectures, configurations, policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Document troubleshooting activities, root causes, resolutions, and client communications.
  • Maintain accurate and timely timesheets and service records.
  • Ensure tickets contain complete and accurate technical notes.
  • Follow established service delivery, documentation, and operational standards.

13. Mentoring & Team Collaboration

  • Mentor and support less experienced engineers through coaching, knowledge sharing, and technical guidance.
  • Participate in team huddles, L10 meetings, one-on-one meetings, training sessions, and technical discussions.
  • Maintain current knowledge of Citrix, VDI, virtualization, Azure, and related technologies.
  • Communicate relevant technology updates, security changes, and industry developments to stakeholders and team members.

Experience

  • 10–15 years of relevant IT experience supporting SMB, enterprise, or MSP environments.
  • Minimum 5 years of hands-on Citrix engineering experience.
  • Extensive experience supporting on-premises Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops (CVAD) environments.
  • Strong hands-on experience with Citrix ADC/NetScaler.
  • Experience working in multi-client, enterprise, or MSP environments.
  • Experience owning or participating in formal change management/change control processes.

The Senior Citrix Engineer will be expected to maintain high standards of service delivery, infrastructure stability, and change management.

Key performance areas include:

  • Chargeable Utilization: Target of approximately 85%
  • Planned Work for the Next Two Weeks: Target of approximately 80%
  • Citrix Environment Uptime/Stability: Target of 99.9%
  • Citrix Environmental Changes Overseen: Target of 85% of applicable changes being reviewed and managed through established change control processes.
