Job description

Description

NAYA Family Center is seeking a detail-oriented and collaborative Grants and Contracts Accountant to join our Finance team. This role helps ensure that the funding supporting NAYA's programs is accurately accounted for, appropriately spent, and managed in accordance with funder requirements. You'll oversee the financial administration of an assigned portfolio of grants and contracts while partnering with program managers and Finance team members to support strong financial stewardship across the organization. You'll manage grant billing, revenue recognition, reconciliations, and financial reporting while monitoring expenditures and helping programs understand where they stand against their budgets. You'll also contribute to month-end close, audit readiness, annual budgeting, and improvements to NAYA's financial processes and systems. If you're someone who enjoys digging into the details, solving discrepancies, and helping program teams successfully navigate grant requirements, this could be a great fit.

NAYA offers an exceptional benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, and life insurance, flexible spending accounts, a 401(k) with up to 6% match, 16 paid holidays, and sick and vacation accrual that increases with tenure. NAYA employees are expected to work primarily on-site. Following successful onboarding and with supervisor approval, there may be flexibility to work from home 1–2 days per week.

Compensation for this position starts at $63,000 annually, commensurate with experience

Who You Are

  • Ideally, you have knowledge of Native American history and experience working within diverse populations, including urban and reservation Native American communities.
  • You bring two to four years of experience in accounting or financial services and are comfortable taking ownership of detailed financial processes and deadlines.
  • You understand generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), including revenue recognition and the accounting treatment of restricted and unrestricted funds.
  • You have experience with grant or contract accounting and understand that different funding sources come with different rules, reporting requirements, and allowable expenses.
  • You can read grant agreements, budgets, and government regulations and translate those requirements into accurate financial practices.
  • You enjoy working collaboratively with program managers and can explain financial information in a way that helps non-finance colleagues understand their budgets and make informed decisions.
  • You're comfortable reconciling accounts, investigating discrepancies, preparing journal entries, and supporting month-end close and audit preparation.
  • You are highly organized and can manage multiple grants, reporting deadlines, and competing priorities without sacrificing accuracy.
  • You take initiative, work well independently, and look for opportunities to make financial processes more efficient while maintaining strong internal controls.
  • You're proficient in Microsoft Excel and financial database systems. Experience with Sage Intacct and nonprofit accounting is strongly preferred.

What You'll Do

  • Manage grant billing, revenue recognition, indirect costs, accounts receivable, and funder receivable reconciliations for an assigned portfolio of grants and contracts.
  • Prepare and submit grant invoices accurately and on time in accordance with funder requirements and reporting deadlines.
  • Review grant agreements and budgets to ensure expenses are appropriately coded, allowable, and compliant with funding restrictions.
  • Monitor grant revenue and expenditures, investigate variances and discrepancies, and maintain accurate financial records throughout the grant lifecycle.
  • Meet regularly with program managers to review budgets, spending, grant performance, and upcoming financial needs.
  • Partner with Grants and Finance team members to gather documentation and ensure accurate, complete, and timely grant reporting and invoicing.
  • Support month-end close through journal entries, reconciliations, transaction review, and other accounting activities.
  • Maintain accurate contract and grant budgets within Sage Intacct and support development of NAYA's annual agency budget.
  • Help maintain ongoing audit readiness and ensure grant-funded activities comply with applicable laws, accounting standards, regulations, and funder requirements.
  • Review financial tracking and reporting processes, identify opportunities for improvement, and help strengthen the accuracy and efficiency of NAYA's financial systems.
  • Stay informed about changes to grant regulations and accounting standards that may affect NAYA's programs or financial practices.
  • Contribute as an active, collaborative member of the Finance team and across departments in support of NAYA's mission.
