Job description

OpsFi is a growing, boutique accounting and advisory firm servicing high growth clients in the tech industry and our offices are based in Bree Street, Cape Town.

We have specific openings for fully remote roles (within South Africa) and roles based in Cape Town to build a greater hybrid office presence (where we will expect a certain amount of office days per month for the Cape Town team).

Our offshore client is an InsurTech firm based in California in the United States leveraging modern software platforms, AI risk modelling, and state-of-the-art hardware engineering to provide next-generation insurance solutions for B2C and B2B customers in the United States.

We are looking to recruit a Full Stack Developer to join their offshore division, that will work exclusively for their Engineering team (i.e. fully integrated into their team and workflows). You would work remotely from South Africa with a combination of SA & US-based teams. This is an exciting opportunity to grow experience in international markets and work alongside a dynamic team who are building out exciting products in the insurance and tech space.

We are growing the structure in South Africa, and the titles will evolve as the structure takes shape, so it is a great time to join the team. This opportunity would suit an individual who is looking to progress their career and develop intuition.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will take ownership of building and maintaining scalable, high-performing software applications across both frontend and backend architectures. Your responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

  • End-to-End Application Development: Design, develop, and deploy responsive user interfaces and robust backend services to power core customer features and internal tools.
  • API & System Integration: Build and maintain reliable APIs to seamlessly integrate our core platform with third-party services, AI risk models, and hardware telemetry feeds.
  • Database Management & Optimisation: Design efficient data models, write performant database queries, and ensure data integrity across relational and non-relational database systems.
  • Code Quality & Testing: Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code. Conduct code reviews, implement unit/integration tests, and ensure strong technical practices across the stack.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner directly with Product Owners and QA engineers in an Agile/Scrum environment to clarify specifications, refine tasks, and iterate rapidly on features.
  • System Performance & Security: Continuously monitor platform performance, resolve technical debt, eliminate bugs, and apply security best practices to protect sensitive insurance and user data.

Requirements

  • Experience: 3–5 years of hands-on software engineering experience building and maintaining web applications across the full stack in a modern software environment.
  • Frontend Expertise: Strong proficiency in modern JavaScript/TypeScript frameworks (e.g., React, Vue.js, or Angular) alongside HTML5, CSS3/Tailwind, and modern state management.
  • Backend Expertise: Solid hands-on experience with backend technologies (e.g., Node.js, Python, Go, C#, or Java) and building scalable RESTful/GraphQL APIs.
  • Databases & DevOps: Experience with SQL (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL) and NoSQL databases. Familiarity with cloud environments (AWS/GCP), Docker, and CI/CD deployment pipelines.
  • Core Competencies: Good grasp of web security, performance optimisation, and modern architecture patterns. Ability to break down complex technical problems into clean, scalable solutions.
  • Mindset: Highly organised, proactive, and self-motivated, with excellent communication skills and a strong bias for execution in a fast-paced environment.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or equivalent practical industry experience.
