Discover Impactful Work
As a Field Application Scientist (FAS) within the BioProduction Group, you will serve as a bioprocessing domain expert, helping biotechnology and biopharmaceutical customers accelerate technology adoption, process design, and optimization across downstream workflows. You will engage customers on a peer-to-peer, application-focused basis, providing technical leadership and process insight before, during, and after the sale. Acting as a trusted advisor and problem solver, you will help customers achieve compliance, improve performance, and accelerate implementation of Thermo Fisher Scientific solutions while influencing future product innovation through Voice of Customer (VOC) feedback.

A Day in the Life:
Partner with biotechnology and biopharmaceutical customers to support downstream bioprocessing workflows, provide technical leadership throughout the customer journey, troubleshoot complex process challenges, conduct demonstrations and proof-of-principle studies, deliver technical training, and collaborate across commercial and technical teams to ensure successful customer outcomes while driving continuous product improvement.

What to expect:

  • Serve as a technical expert in downstream bioprocessing, including purification, filtration, and single-use technologies.
  • Engage customers to support process development, optimization, and technology integration.
  • Lead pre- and post-sales technical activities, including demonstrations, proof-of-principle studies, pilot runs, and technology qualification.
  • Troubleshoot quality and performance issues in collaboration with Quality, Technical Support, and Field Service teams.
  • Deliver technical training for customers and internal colleagues.
  • Conduct workflow consulting and GEMBA walks to identify process improvement opportunities.
  • Support Bioprocessing Development Center (BDC) activities and on-site demonstrations.
  • Develop customer adoption plans and monitor implementation success through measurable milestones.
  • Maintain accurate customer engagement records, opportunity tracking, and technical documentation in Salesforce.com (SFDC CRM).
  • Collaborate with Account Managers, Product Management, R&D, Manufacturing, Quality, Regulatory, and Field Service teams.
  • Gather and communicate Voice of Customer (VOC) insights to support product roadmap development and best-practice documentation.
  • Represent Thermo Fisher Scientific at conferences, workshops, webinars, and industry events through technical presentations and thought leadership.

Keys to Success:

Education

  • BS, MS, or PhD in Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Bioengineering, Biotechnology, or a related scientific discipline, or equivalent bioprocessing experience.

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in bioprocessing, including Process Development, MSAT, or cGMP Manufacturing.
  • Experience with single-use chromatography systems, filtration technologies, and downstream purification processes (chromatography, UF/DF, centrifugation, etc.).
  • Demonstrated success supporting process development, troubleshooting, scale-up, technology transfer, and manufacturing optimization.
  • Experience working within regulated cGMP manufacturing environments.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Deep understanding of downstream bioprocessing workflows, cGMP principles, and global regulatory requirements (FDA, EMA, Annex 1).
  • Ability to interpret User Requirement Specifications (URS), P&IDs, batch records, and qualification protocols.
  • Familiarity with automation systems, process control HMIs, and manufacturing operations.
  • Expertise in process design, optimization, and workflow consulting using data-driven methodologies.
  • Knowledge of Process Analytical Technology (PAT), Design of Experiments (DoE), and Quality by Design (QbD) principles (ICH Q8/Q9/Q10).
  • Understanding of ASME-BPE standards and extractables/leachables risk assessments for single-use systems.
  • Proficiency with data analysis tools such as Excel and JMP; scripting experience is an advantage.
  • Experience using Salesforce.com (SFDC CRM) for opportunity and activity management.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, problem-solving, and influencing skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary and global teams.

Your performance is remunerated with an attractive and market-compliant salary. For this position we provide a minimum salary of EUR 68.000 per year. Overpayment is possible based on your previous experience and qualifications.
