Job description

The Structural Steel Detailer will support the delivery of commercial and industrial projects by producing accurate, fabrication-ready drawings and 3D models using Tekla Structures. This role is suited to a detailer with solid foundational experience who can work from architectural and structural drawings, complete assigned detailing tasks, update drawings based on redlines and markups, and continue developing technical knowledge of NZ/AU codes, fabrication practices, and steel detailing standards.

  • Support project delivery by producing accurate 3D models and shop drawings using Tekla Structures, based on markups and design input from senior team members.
  • Detail repetitive or standard steel components, including base plates, bracing, cleats, stair treads, handrails, and other structural steel elements.
  • Work from architectural and structural drawings to complete assigned sections of detailing packages under supervision.
  • Collaborate with senior detailers to incorporate feedback, redlines, RFIs, and revisions into updated models and drawings.
  • Assist with drawing revisions and version control, ensuring current documentation is maintained and distributed appropriately.
  • Learn and apply NZ/AU steel detailing standards, fabrication methods, and construction codes under guidance.
  • Participate in internal team meetings and technical reviews to improve technical knowledge and contribute to quality outcomes.
  • Maintain drawing files, model records, and project documentation in line with project and company standards.
  • Support workshop efficiency, buildability, and overall project delivery through accurate and reliable detailing output.
  • Adhere to company QHSE policies and procedures at all times.
  • Other position-level duties as they arise.

Requirements

  • Minimum 3+ years’ experience in structural steel detailing, ideally within the New Zealand or Australian market.
  • Competent in Tekla Structures, or similar 3D steel detailing software, with willingness to continue developing technical capability.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering and architectural drawings accurately.
  • Understanding of basic steel fabrication and erection practices within NZ/AU construction environments.
  • Exposure to relevant codes and standards such as AS/NZS 1554.1 and AS/NZS 5131 is preferred.
  • Experience detailing structural steel components such as base plates, bracing, cleats, stair elements, handrails, frames, or similar fabricated steelwork.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, reliable, and fabrication-ready outputs.
  • Willingness to take direction, learn from feedback, and work collaboratively with senior detailers and project teams.
  • Good communication skills, with the ability to ask clarifying questions, report progress, and respond to feedback professionally.
  • Competency in Microsoft Office tools, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Organised, reliable, and able to maintain clear drawing files, revisions, and project documentation.
