Job description

Company Description

Montu is Australia's largest healthtech business with a focus on alternative healthcare. Founded in 2019, it supports patients, doctors and pharmacies through its Alternaleaf clinic, offers accredited healthcare education to clinicians via its SAGED platform, and dispensing solutions to pharmacies across Australia through Leafio. Montu is also the founding member of Cannabis Council Australia, a non-for-profit advocacy body that advances legislative change across the healthcare landscape. Our mission is to make alternative healthcare more affordable and accessible for the millions who could benefit.

Montu has been recognised as Australia’s fastest-growing tech company in the Deloitte TechFast 50 for two consecutive years (#1 in 2022 and 2023), achieving remarkable revenue growth of 26,000% and 9,000%. Named #1 on LinkedIn’s Top Startups Australia 2024, Montu has cemented its position as the largest business of its kind outside North America and continues to evolve on its journey.

This role is an Australia-based, fully work-from-home position, with access to co-working spaces in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

Job Description

As the Medical Affairs Associate, you will act as the crucial bridge between Montu’s commercial marketing output and strict clinical and regulatory standards. Sitting within the Marketing team, you will provide the scientific rigor and clinical credibility that underpins all content across our B2C and B2B brands, including Alternaleaf, Leafio, and Montu Brands.

Operating independently, your core focus will span medical compliance review, prescriber and pharmacist education, and providing in-house clinical expertise to inform content and campaign decisions. By leveraging your strong background in medical affairs or clinical communications, you will ensure everything we publish is accurate, evidence-based, and fully compliant with TGA advertising guidelines for scheduled medicines.

Key Responsibilities

1. Medical Review & Compliance Advisory

Review all external facing content and marketing assets across Alternaleaf, Leafio, and Montu Brands prior to publication, ensuring:

  • All claims are accurate, evidence-based, and substantiated by verified references.
  • Content complies with TGA advertising guidelines for S8 scheduled medicines and medicinal cannabis products.
  • B2C materials meet patient communication and TGA compliance standards.
  • B2B materials meet clinical and professional communication standards for pharmacist and prescriber audiences and TGA compliance standards.
  • Provide clear, actionable compliance advisory to the Content and broader Marketing team.
  • Provide expert medical/scientific advice for Montu businesses and brands by:
    • Responding to requests for scientific/technical information;
    • Conducting systematic literature reviews of current clinical evidence for relevant therapeutic areas and conditions;
    • Providing clinical summaries and concise synthesis of evidence for internal briefings and HCP-facing distribution
  • Manage tasks, feedback, and approvals through project management and approval systems, communicate proactively on progress and blockers, and move work forward.

2. Prescriber & Pharmacist Education

Bring known and emerging clinical research into the team to support claims around the efficacy of medicinal cannabis to improve prescriber and pharmacist confidence. This includes developing and contributing to:

  • Learning modules: Develop high-quality, evidence-based, clinically accurate educational content for prescribers, nurses, and pharmacists covering medicinal cannabis fundamentals, scheduling, patient eligibility, dispensing, TGA guidelines, and common clinical questions.
  • Onboarding and re-engagement collateral: clinical guidance materials that build prescribing knowledge.
  • Collaborate with internal and external contributors as required to ensure educational content meets medical education standards.
  • Review and update educational materials to reflect the latest evidence and recommended practices.
  • Propose new ideas for educational content and resources, and advise on industry trends and best practices that Montu should consider when developing education.
  • Support Clinical Research, including input on design and implementation of clinical research projects within defined standards and budgets for Montu (e.g. Phase IV, post marketing clinical activities such as registry/database projects, epidemiological surveys, etc).

3. Clinical Expertise

Bring and maintain in depth knowledge of the Australian Medicinal Cannabis clinical and regulatory landscape, including:

  • Monitoring TGA advertising guideline updates and regulatory changes affecting S8 scheduled medicines and medicinal cannabis products, and proactively brief the Content and broader Marketing team on implications.
  • Providing input on content and campaign strategy to differentiate products and strengthen commercial positioning.
  • Tracking emerging clinical evidence, new studies, and guideline developments in relevant therapeutic areas, and translating these into accessible internal information.
  • Responding to clinical questions from Content, Marketing, and teams requiring expert interpretation of evidence.
  • Reviewing competitor products and clinical communications to maintain awareness of the broader category.

4. Industry Presence and Understanding

Support Montu’s scientific credibility and external relationships:

  • Establish and maintain professional and credible relationships with key thought leaders / external experts and academic centres; this will potentially involve participating in scientific congresses, coordinating advisory boards, round-table meetings, discussion fora etc.
  • Engage in scientific exchanges to elevate clinical practices and care standards.
  • Develop collaborative projects with thought leaders and investigate competitor products.

Qualifications

  • Advanced tertiary qualification in a scientific discipline (PharmD, MD, PhD preferred but not essential).
  • 2-3 years demonstrated experience in a Medical Affairs or Clinical Affairs role within the pharmaceutical industry, including experience with Schedule 8 medications and a solid understanding of drug development and clinical research.
  • Strong working knowledge of TGA advertising guidelines for scheduled medicines, with the ability to apply these independently and advise others.
  • Proven ability to evaluate clinical literature, conduct literature reviews, and produce accurately referenced scientific content.
  • Strong commitment to compliance with the relevant rules and procedures, and to scientific quality and integrity.
  • Ability to work independently with limited clinical oversight, managing multiple review and writing tasks across concurrent projects.
  • Strong experience and ability in medical writing.
  • Experience being an active contributor to cross-functional teams and/or working in matrix organisations will be an advantage. Works independently: limited guidance/oversight. Works broadly across functions to facilitate and support the affiliate’s medical and clinical activities as necessary.
  • Sound judgement, strong planning and organisational skills, and the ability to get things done. Demonstrated strong sense of urgency.
  • Comfortable working across digital tools and collaborative platforms, including project management tools, content review tools, and team communication platforms.
