The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) is seeking a passionate and experienced Occupational Hygienist to join its Safety and Environment Department. This is a unique opportunity to lead initiatives that identify, assess and control workplace health hazards across diverse operational environments, including subway systems, bus garages, maintenance facilities, construction projects and administrative workplaces.

What You Will Do

 

Reporting to the Director – Occupational Hygiene and Environment, you will play a key role in protecting the health, safety and wellbeing of TTC employees and customers across one of North America’s largest and most complex public transit system.  As an Occupational Hygiene subject matter expert you will help identify, assess and control workplace health hazards, support compliance with legislative requirements, and contribute to the continuous improvement of corporate occupational hygiene programs.  
 
You will lead and support initiatives designed to anticipate, prevent and control workplace health hazards by developing, implementing and maintaining occupational hygiene standards, programs, procedures and training. You will monitor compliance with applicable legislation, regulations, standards and best practices, provide guidance on actual and potential compliance issues, and help ensure TTC programs remain effective, practical and aligned with emerging industry trends and occupational health risks.

 
You will investigate and evaluate existing or potential workplace health hazards across a wide range of operational environments, including transit facilities, maintenance operations, construction projects and administrative workplaces. This includes identifying, assessing and evaluating physical, chemical, biological and ergonomic hazards; assessing the effectiveness of existing controls; conducting risk assessments; and determining appropriate monitoring, sampling and testing strategies.
 
You will conduct and/or oversee occupational hygiene sampling and testing activities using specialized equipment and methodologies. You will accurately assess workplace exposures, interpret findings, and apply scientific and analytical expertise to develop practical recommendations that prevent, eliminate, control or reduce occupational health risks.
 
You will provide expert advice and direction to management, employees and other stakeholders regarding occupational hygiene issues, legislated requirements and corporate policies and procedures. As a trusted technical resource, you will influence decision-making, support continuous improvement initiatives, and collaborate with operational departments, Occupational Health & Employee Wellbeing, WSIB, consultants, regulatory agencies and other external partners to address workplace health concerns and improve employee health outcomes.

 

You will review and validate technical reports, studies and assessments completed by service providers to ensure they meet professional occupational hygiene standards and support sound decision-making. You will also prepare reports, analyses, recommendations and other documentation to communicate findings and support business and regulatory requirements.

 

You will develop and deliver occupational hygiene training, presentations and awareness programs that help build organizational knowledge and promote a proactive approach to workplace health and safety.
 
In addition, you will treat employees and customers with respect and dignity and support TTC’s commitment to accessibility, equity, and inclusion by ensuring the needs of passengers and employees with disabilities are accommodated and/or addressed (if applicable and within their area of responsibility) in accordance with the Ontario Human Rights Code and Related Orders so that they can fully benefit from the TTC as a Service-provider and an employer.  You will perform other duties as assigned.

What Qualifications Do You Bring?

 

  • Completion of a university degree in a relevant field such as Occupational Hygiene, Occupational Health & Safety, or the equivalent; and directly related work experience.
  • Master’s degree in occupational hygiene or related discipline is preferred.
  • Professional certifications such as Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Registered Occupational Hygienist (ROH), Canadian Registered Safety
  • Professional (CRSP) or equivalent are considered assets.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of science or a related discipline combined with comprehensive knowledge of occupational hygiene principles, standards and practices, and applicable governing legislation, codes and standards that include Occupational Health and Safety Act and related regulations, standards, guidelines and best practices.
  • Good knowledge of industry and best practices related to occupational hygiene principles and practices.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of research procedures, field sampling methods and investigative techniques, and statistical analysis related to occupational hygiene.
  • Demonstrated experience leading the development, implementation, maintenance and continuous improvement of corporate occupational hygiene programs, standards and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, assess and control physical, chemical, biological and ergonomic hazards in diverse workplace environments.
    Sound knowledge of training methods, materials and techniques combined with the ability to make effective presentations of technical information in a publicly understandable manner.
  • Sound working knowledge of computers and computer applications related to the work such as Microsoft Office Excel, Access, Word and PowerPoint; OneNote, SharePoint (Document Management System), Expostats, IHSTAT, etc.
  • Familiarity with specialized broad range of occupational hygiene instrumentation such as velometers, gas detectors, noise dosimeters, sound level meters, dust monitors, respirator fit-testing equipment, light metre and sampling pumps.
  • Sound judgement; well-developed oral communication and report writing skills; well-developed interpersonal, organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to coordinate and direct activities of others engaged in the investigation of health hazards.
  • Must have or rapidly acquire a comprehensive knowledge of the Ontario Human Rights Code and Related Orders including disability accommodation and accessibility requirements pertaining to passengers and employees.
