Job description

Create content people actually want to watch.

An exciting opportunity exists for a Social Media Coordinator to join the Mukuru team in Cape Town. This is a role for someone with real social media experience and even better energy: a natural communicator with a genuine passion for videography and content creation, who lives on social, spots trends before they peak, and knows how to turn great ideas into content that people want to watch and share.

The main purpose of this role is to coordinate and support the day-to-day running of Mukuru’s social media platforms, from content planning, copywriting and video content creation through to design briefing, stakeholder coordination and reporting, while bringing fresh, innovative, trend-led thinking that grows our reach and engagement.

The Social Media Coordinator reports directly to the Social Media and Content Manager, supporting the execution of multiple social media pages across our markets. This is a great opportunity to work in a purpose-driven, fast-paced organisation and make a real impact on how millions of customers connect with the Mukuru brand.

Internal liaison takes place with Marketing, Design, Compliance, Legal and country teams. External liaison takes place with creators, partners and audiences through social media content.

Duties and Responsibilities (Includes but is not limited to)

  • Coordinate and support the execution of the social media content calendar across all Mukuru platforms (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X, LinkedIn and YouTube), ensuring content goes live on time, on brand and error free
  • Copywrite social media posts in line with Mukuru brand guidelines and tone of voice, adapting copy natively for each platform
  • Actively monitor social and cultural trends, trending sounds, formats and conversations, and move quickly to develop timely, brand-safe reactive content that positions Mukuru at the centre of the moment
  • Generate and pitch creative ideas designed to drive shareability, virality and organic reach, including interactive formats, challenges and community-led content
  • Shoot and edit short-form video content (TikToks, Reels, YouTube Shorts and behind-the-scenes moments), bringing a genuine passion for videography and a sharp eye for what performs on each platform
  • Create static and video content using Canva, CapCut and similar tools, ready for publishing or for handover to the design team for finishing
  • Demonstrate strong working knowledge of all social channels, their algorithms, native formats and best practice, and advise the team on what works where
  • Bring strong planning discipline to the content calendar: plan content ahead of key dates, campaigns and cultural moments so the team is always prepared, never reactive by accident
  • Apply a deep understanding of our audiences and their behaviour across African markets and diaspora corridors (Zimbabwe, South Africa, Malawi, Botswana, Zambia, Kenya, Uganda, Lesotho and the UK), tailoring content, tone and cultural references so every post feels local and authentic
  • Write clear, complete design briefs for the creative team, including creative direction, on-creative copy, captions and formats, and manage the briefing-to-delivery process
  • Apply strong project management across campaigns and always-on content: manage timelines, trackers, approval flows and asset organisation so that nothing slips
  • Manage internal stakeholders across marketing, compliance, legal and country teams, routing content through the correct sign-off chains and keeping everyone informed
  • Use AI tools responsibly to support ideation, copy drafts, creative concepts and production efficiency, in line with Mukuru guidelines
  • Use Sprout Social (or similar social media management tools) for publishing, scheduling, social listening and reporting
  • Support the tracking and reporting of social media performance (reach, engagement, follower growth, video views), pulling data and insights for weekly and monthly reports
  • Assist with the planning and execution of digital competitions, from mechanics and copy through sign-off and winner management
  • Support influencer and partnership content coordination, including content collection, scheduling and performance tracking
  • Collaborate with the wider Marketing team to integrate social media into broader campaigns and product launches
  • Keep abreast of new platform features, emerging tools and developments in the remittance and fintech space, sharing learnings with the team

Key Requirements

  • Grade 12 or equivalent (essential)
  • Degree, diploma or certificate in Marketing, Digital Marketing, Communications or a related field
  • Minimum 2 to 3 years of hands-on social media or digital marketing experience (in-house or agency)
  • Proven experience managing brand social media pages across Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X and LinkedIn
  • Strong awareness of African audiences and their online behaviour, particularly markets such as Zimbabwe, South Africa and the wider diaspora, with the ability to create content that lands authentically in each
  • Hands-on videography skills: confident shooting content on phone or camera and editing in CapCut or similar, with a portfolio or examples of video content created
  • Confident working in Canva for static and video content creation
  • Working knowledge of social media management tools such as Sprout Social, Hootsuite or Later
  • Familiarity with AI tools for content ideation and production (e.g. ChatGPT, Claude, CapCut AI features)
  • Basic understanding of social media reporting and key metrics
  • Fintech or financial services exposure is advantageous but not essential

Additional Skills

  • Excellent people skills, with a warm, positive and energetic approach
  • A genuine passion for videography, content creation and storytelling through video
  • A natural feel for internet culture, trends and what makes content shareable
  • Strong planning, project management, organisational and administrative skills
  • A fast learner who thrives in an always-changing social media landscape and picks up new platforms, formats and tools quickly
  • Innovative and curious, always bringing fresh ideas and better ways of doing things
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Confident stakeholder management and the ability to keep multiple teams aligned
  • Detail oriented with high standards for quality and accuracy
  • Analytical mindset, comfortable working with data and insights
  • Proactive, adaptable and calm under pressure in a fast-paced environment
