Job description

Company Description

Managing business expenses shouldn't be a guessing game. Yet many SMEs still lack clear cash flow visibility and spend control. At Budgetly, we're changing that.

We're building an AI-first platform that simplifies expense management and helps businesses make better financial decisions, faster. The goal is simple: help you spend smarter, save time, and grow profitably.

This role is part of a small fully remote team, reporting to the Team Lead with a light-touch structure — you own your lane and outcomes directly and are trusted to deliver. The entire company is going all-in on AI-enabled workflows, and this role is central to making that real and keeping our platform secure at the infrastructure level.

Job Description

What you'll actually do

You own architecture and technical direction across AWS, security, platform reliability, data, and AI infrastructure. You’ll be building and refining the platform, as well as contributing to feature development. Architecture related work will initially take 60-70% of your time.

Your day to day:

  • Owns architecture decisions across DevSecOps, Platform/Reliability, Data, and AI infrastructure
  • Build secure-by-design practices into the platform: IAM, cloud security, secure engineering
  • Set standards for platform scaling, resilience, and reliability
  • Partner with our Data Engineer to build out data lake and analytics capability
  • Develop our AI infrastructure including model and agent integration, secure AI data pipelines, platform-level AI guardrails
  • Contribute to hands-on feature development
  • Refactor code and pay down technical debt when possible

Qualifications

What We're Looking For

  1. Deep technical ownership. You've led architecture decisions for a platform or system end-to-end, not just implemented against someone else's design. You know how to make the call on AWS, security, and platform trade-offs and stand behind it.
  2. Genuine hands-on orientation. You still want to be in the codebase. You'd rather build the thing you designed than hand it off entirely.

What we need from you

  • Strong AWS infrastructure experience in production: Serverless, Lambda, DynamoDB, ECS Fargate, EventBridge, CDK
  • Strong security expertise in backend/cloud systems: secure architecture, IAM, cloud security
  • Deep backend engineering designing and evolving microservices or distributed systems
  • A track record of architectural ownership, not just feature implementation
  • Familiarity with agent tooling concepts: tool calling, MCP/tool integration, guardrails, evals, tracing/observability, and permissioning
  • Experience with our tech stack including TypeScript, React, and GitHub Actions
  • Ideally you hold AWS certifications, in particular AWS Solutions Architect (Associate or Professional)
  • Previous experience in FinTech, payments, or finance industry is preferred

Read this before you apply

You'll thrive here if you love owning a wide technical lane with real autonomy, enjoy building as much as designing, and want a senior track that stays technical rather than pulling you toward management.

It's not the right fit if you're aiming for a people-management track, if your depth is mainly AI/ML rather than backend/AWS/security, or if you've mostly implemented against architecture set by others rather than owned it yourself.

Compensation for this role is up to approx $200k + Super + ESOP. This role requires candidates to have full Australian Work Rights and you must be located in Australia.

  • 5 weeks annual leave and flexible working - we believe in balance
  • Monthly “Wellness Budget” to help you stay healthy, mentally & physically
