Job description

Join Our Team
We are seeking a Public Health Informatician to bridge public health practice and engineering on a disease surveillance modernization program. This role owns the data flows public health runs on, from electronic lab reporting to case reporting to immunizations, and shapes how a national user community works for years to come.

About This Role
As the program's Public Health Informatician, you are the bridge between public health practice and the engineering teams. You design, configure, and troubleshoot end-to-end public health data flows, including electronic lab reporting (ELR), electronic case reporting (eCR), vital records, syndromic surveillance, and immunization data, ensuring smooth ingestion, linkage, analysis, and reporting across the full data lifecycle. When a jurisdiction's messages stop flowing or a new reporting requirement lands, you are the person the program looks to first.

What You'll Do
Own the data flows
  • Design, configure, and troubleshoot ELR, eCR, vital records, syndromic surveillance, and immunization data flows end to end
  • Apply expertise in public health data standards: HL7v2, FHIR, CDA, CSV, XML, and JSON
  • Support case notification implementation, including current and emerging Message Mapping Guides (MMGs)
  • Analyze payload and standards changes and translate them into engineering work the teams can execute
Solve onboarding problems
  • Resolve jurisdiction onboarding and migration challenges so the system meets data and workflow requirements
  • Support jurisdictions through national case notification onboarding processes in coordination with federal programs
  • Validate page content and data porting packages against reporting requirements before release
Work across the team
  • Coordinate closely with engineering, product, and epidemiology subject matter experts to align system workflows with the operational realities of public health practice
  • Contribute to cross-functional delivery activities, including data and engineering tasks as needed
  • Serve as an escalation point behind user support for message-flow and data-quality issues
Your day to day
  • Work the message troubleshooting queue: failed or malformed HL7 messages, mapping errors, and vocabulary mismatches
  • Lead jurisdiction onboarding working sessions and document the data-flow decisions that come out of them
  • Review interoperability test cases with QA and validate them against real-world message samples
  • Join backlog refinement to keep user stories faithful to how data actually moves
  • Participate in user community calls and turn recurring pain points into actionable backlog items

What You Bring
  • Master of Public Health, health informatics degree, or equivalent applied experience
  • Hands-on experience with HL7v2 message construction and troubleshooting in production public health systems
  • Direct experience supporting state or local health department data operations
  • Working knowledge of public health vocabulary standards (LOINC, SNOMED CT)
Preferred
  • Rhapsody or Mirth integration engine experience; PHINMS familiarity
  • Integrated disease surveillance system experience at the state or federal level
  • eCR and RCKMS familiarity
  • Experience working inside agile software teams

Logistics and Classification
  • Location: remote (contractor facility), with core-hours availability 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM ET.
  • Occasional domestic travel to client and stakeholder sites.
  • All personnel must be able to obtain a federal background investigation commensurate with position sensitivity and a PIV credential. No security clearance is required.
  • This position is contingent upon contract award, with an anticipated start in October 2026.

Salary Information
  • $125,000.00 to $135,000.00 - commensurate with experience and skillset
