Job Summary:

The Class B CDL driver for water trucks, dump trucks, or hydro vac trucks is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of these vehicles, which includes driving to and from job sites, performing daily vehicle inspections before and after each trip, maintaining equipment, and completing necessary paperwork. Specific duties vary by truck type, such as hauling materials for dump trucks, transporting water for water trucks, or performing excavation using high-pressure water and vacuum systems for hydro vac trucks.

Duties/Responsibilities:

 

  • Operate and drive heavy vehicles such as dump trucks, water trucks, and hydro vac trucks.
  • Verifying the types of materials being transported and ensuring that they do not exceed weight restrictions.
  • Load and unload cargo.
  • Maintain accurate driver logs and vehicle inspections, pre and post trip 
  • Keep truck, and associated equipment, clean and in good working order.
  • Report serious mechanical problems to the appropriate personnel.
  • Report all accidents, near misses and other hazards.
  • Planning routes efficiently and delivering freight on time.
  • Complying with deferral and state trucking rules and regulations, including mandatory rest periods and weight restrictions.


Specific duties by vehicle type 

  • Dump Truck: Transport materials like dirt, sand, gravel, or waste from one site to another. Operate the truck's dumping mechanism.
  • Water Truck: Transport and deliver water, often to construction or industrial sites for dust control, soil compaction, or other purposes.
  • Hydro Vac Truck: Use high-pressure water and a powerful vacuum to safely excavate and expose underground utilities (hydro excavation), which can include potholing, trenching, and pressure washing. This may also involve cleaning tanks and performing confined space entry.

 

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Applicable commercial driver’s license (Class B CDL).
  • Mechanically inclined with great problem-solving skills. Basic knowledge of vehicle maintenance and safety procedures
  • Works well independently and with others under pressure.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Organized with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and stressful environment.

 

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Minimum of 3 years of Class B Driving experience.
  • A clean driving record, as well as sound knowledge of truck maintenance.
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws that regulate the road freight transport industry. 


Physical Requirements:

  • Able to bend, stretch, push, pull, and move as needed to reach, clean, and service machinery.
  • Must be able to visually inspect machines.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Physical ability to stand, kneel, or walk for extended periods and to wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
