Job description

At Shakepay, we’re on a mission to usher in the Bitcoin golden age. We’re reimagining financial services to give every Canadian their fair shake.

Our culture is built around doing work that matters, winning as a team, and celebrating success. If you're the kind of person who values growth, shipping fast, and sharing your ideas openly with a group of like-minded people, come and build with us!

About Shakepay

Since 2015, we've been on a mission to help Canadians build long-term wealth through bitcoin. Over the past few years, we've expanded beyond buying and selling bitcoin to offer a growing suite of everyday financial products - including the Shakepay Card, direct deposit, bill payments and Interac e-Transfer - making it easier to earn, save and use bitcoin every day. Today, more than 1.5 million Canadians use Shakepay to grow their bitcoin savings and take control of their financial future as we continue to push the boundaries of what modern financial services can look like.

We’re regulated as an investment dealer across all Canadian provinces and territories, and backed by renowned venture capitalists with a funding of $44M. We have a passionate, loyal, and growing community, and we’re looking for people who want to help us build something truly special.

About the team

The Legal team is small but highly leveraged. We partner closely with Product, Compliance, Finance, Operations, People, and leadership to help Shakepay move quickly in a highly regulated environment.

We're building a modern legal function where legal operations, automation and AI are part of how we work, not side projects. If you enjoy improving systems, taking ownership, and finding better ways of working, you'll have a meaningful impact from day one.

About the role

We're looking for an experienced Senior Paralegal to join us on a contract through late March or early April.

This is much more than a traditional corporate paralegal role. You'll own core legal operations, corporate administration, contract workflows and regulatory documentation while helping us build a more scalable Legal function. You'll work directly with the General Counsel and leadership team and have significant autonomy to improve processes, introduce efficiencies and leverage AI wherever it creates value.

We're looking for someone who enjoys figuring things out, brings strong judgment and can quickly become a trusted partner to the business.

What you’ll be doing

  • Own day-to-day legal operations and corporate administration.
  • Maintain corporate records, minute books, governance documents, annual filings, and entity records.
  • Prepare, review, organize, and coordinate execution of contracts, NDAs, signature packages, templates, and other legal documentation.
  • Support regulatory and compliance initiatives through document management, evidence collection, licensing and registration work, and regulatory responses.
  • Manage legal intake, priorities, deadlines, and matter tracking.
  • Improve how Legal operates by building better templates, playbooks, workflows, knowledge management, and AI-enabled processes.
  • Partner with teams across the company to help legal work move efficiently.

Who we’re looking for

  • Certified paralegal or equivalent Canadian corporate law clerk/paralegal qualification.
  • 5+ years of experience supporting an in-house legal team or law firm.
  • Strong experience with corporate governance, corporate records, commercial contracts, and legal administration.
  • Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail and follow-through.
  • Comfortable working independently, managing competing priorities, and bringing structure to ambiguous problems.
  • Curious about technology and excited to use AI and automation to improve the way legal work gets done.
  • Excellent written communication, judgment, and discretion.

Bonus points

  • Experience in fintech, payments, financial services, crypto, banking, or another regulated industry.
  • Experience building legal operations, improving workflows, or implementing legal technology.
  • Experience supporting a fast-growing startup or scaling company.
  • Familiarity with procurement, vendor contracts, external counsel management and regulatory work.

Why join us?

  • Help shape the future of money: Be part of a team that's revolutionizing financial services in Canada, one sat at a time.
  • Impact millions: As cryptocurrency continues to gain traction, our potential for growth is massive. You can help us bring Shakepay and Bitcoin to all Canadians.
  • Grow your career: We’re growing, and so can you! We have programs in place to encourage continuous learning, growth, and development.
  • Ideas, not titles: We want the best ideas to make their way through, no matter where they come from.

Perks and benefits

  • 🤝 Be an owner: Every employee has stock options as part of their total compensation.
  • 🥅 Reach your goals: Develop with continuous feedback and quarterly performance and compensation review.
  • 🦷 Health & wellness: Access to health and dental coverage, including health and wellness spending accounts.
  • 🌎 Remote-friendly: Work from anywhere in Canada, with optional access to our office spaces in Montreal and Toronto.
  • 🆙 Level Up: A $2,000 annual budget for courses, certifications, and training to support your career growth.
  • 🌴 Time off: 20 days of vacation per year. And if you use all your vacation, we give you a $1,000 bonus.
  • 🐣 Parental leave: Enjoy a parental leave top up to 100% of your salary for 18 weeks.
  • 🙌 Have fun together: quarterly team-specific or company-wide offsite to connect with each other.

We understand that potential can be just as valuable as experience. If you're eager to learn, grow, and contribute to the mission but worry that you may not have the “right” experience, we still want you to apply. We encourage applications from everyone, regardless of background and life experience. We’re firm believers that a little bit of slope makes up for a lot of y-intercept.

We use technology, including artificial intelligence (AI), to support certain parts of our hiring process. This can include tools that assist with scheduling, application review, candidate communications, and generating interview notes, guides, or summaries so our team can stay focused on the conversation. All hiring decisions are made by our hiring team.

Fluency in English is required due to the percentage of English-speaking customers and the nature of our platform, which is available to all Canadians.
