Job Overview

This position serves as a subject matter expert in leave management with deep knowledge of FMLA (Family and Medical Leave Act), ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) and MAPFML (Massachusetts Paid Family and Medical Leave), and other state leave programs This role manages complex leave cases, ensures compliance with federal and state regulations, and provides advanced guidance to employees, managers, and HR partners. This position also supports process improvements, conducts audits, trains team members, and routinely monitors workflows. This role is responsible for partnering with the State of Massachusetts to ensure accurate and timely employer documentation.

Job Description

Minimum Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field AND Three (3) years of Human Resources or relevant Business experience with at least two (2) years of leave of absence experience OR;
Associate’s degree in a related field AND Five (5) years of Human Resources or relevant business experience with at least two (2) years of leave of absence case management experience OR;
High School Diploma or equivalent AND Seven (7) years of Human Resources or relevant business experience with at least two (2) years of leave of absence case management experience.

2. Experience supporting employees through complex leave scenarios (intermittent leave, extensions, ADA accommodations).


Preferred Qualifications:
1. Experience with Workday.

2. Experience with UKG Timekeeping.

3. Experience with leave of absence claims management technology (i.e. Pulpstream, Absensesoft, etc.).
4. Professional certification in human resources such as the PHR, SPHR, or SHRM certification.

5. Experience with Massachusetts Paid Family and Medical Leave (MA PFML).

Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities listed below are intended to describe the general nature of work and are not intended to be an all-inclusive list.  Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

1. Serves as primary escalation point for complex FMLA and multi-jurisdictional leave cases; partners with Senior ADA Specialist when accommodation is required.

2. Interacts with the State of Massachusetts to provide MAPFML employer documentation to the state, including reports to ensure compliance with labor laws and regulations.

3. Provides advanced guidance to employees and managers on leave policies, eligibility, and procedures.

4. Resolves escalated or complex leave cases, including intermittent leave, overlapping regulations, etc.; partners directly with Senior ADA Specialist on ADA‑related scenarios.

5. Conducts audits of leave cases and payroll records to ensure proper documentation and adherence to company policies.

6. Trains team members on the effective use of technology, process updates and changes to leave laws.

7. Generates detailed reports on leave utilization and trends for management review.

8. Regularly backs up leave-related data to prevent loss and ensure that technology is updated.

9. Partner with HR, Legal, and managers to support consistent application of leave policies and ensure compliance across the organization.

10. Leads major/complex projects as assigned.

11. Assists with providing guidance, training, and mentorship to the Leave team members to ensure projects and responsibilities are accomplished on time and within expected standards.

12. Supports department leadership in monitoring all leave management workflows and solving immediately daily problems to keep workflow moving smoothly.  

13. Monitors key metrics (KPIs), generates progress reports for leadership, and identifies areas of process improvement.

14. Acts as a primary point of contact for Leave Case Analyst for routine questions, new hire training, and advising on best practices.

15. Responsible for approving/denying complex leave cases accordance with regulatory and company policy requirements

16. Identifies and mitigates compliance risks through audit findings and corrective actions.

Physical Requirements:

1. Frequent sitting, occasional standing & walking, and lifting of 5-10 lbs.  

2. Mental requirements will be intense at times with involvement in many concurrent multi-faceted projects.

3. Requires manual dexterity using fine hand manipulation to operate a computer keyboard or related equipment

4. Requires ability to see computer screen, monitoring equipment and reports.

3. Specialized knowledge in Leave Administration, HR Operations, HR Service Delivery, Benefits, and HRIS.

5. Flexible and collaborative approach and able to shift priorities, absorb new information quickly, and work effectively in a changing environment.

6. Ability to coach and train team members on systems, processes, and regulatory updates.

7. Process‑improvement mindset and ability to identify opportunities to streamline workflows, enhance compliance, and improve employee experience.

8. Ability to collaborate with regulatory agencies with confidence and professionalism when interacting directly with state agencies or regulatory bodies, ensuring accurate documentation, timely responses, and compliance with evolving requirements

9. Strong working knowledge and application of federal and state disability and paid family leave laws (i.e., ADA, FMLA, PFML, Parental Leave, Workers Compensation, and other state/local regulations).

10.  Ability to work independently and regularly exercise discretion.

11. Organized, detail oriented and to manage multiple priorities in a deadline driven environment.

12. High level of confidentiality and ability to effectively communicate with employees at all levels.

13. Possess a strong sense of urgency as part of the daily work style.

14. Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Teams, and Excel.

Job Profile Summary

​This role focuses on supporting the design, development, and implementation of human resource programs and policies, including recruitment, training and development, compensation and benefits, mobility, talent acquisition, diversity, talent management & organization development and employee/labor relations. In addition, this role focuses on performing the following leave of absence duties: Designs, implements, and administers Tufts Medicine’s leave of absence programs. Responsibilities also include program design, communications, vendor partnerships, and managing solutions that align with Tufts Medicine's strategies to engage and retain talent. This role is also accountable for working collaboratively with leaders, legal, and key stakeholders to ensure compliance with all regulatory aspects of leave of absence and related policies. A professional individual contributor role that may direct the work of other lower level professionals or manage processes and programs.  The majority of time is spent overseeing the design, implementation or delivery of processes, programs and policies using specialized knowledge and skills typically acquired through advanced education. An experienced level role that applies practical knowledge of job area typically obtained through advanced education and work experience.  Works independently with general supervision, problems faced are difficult but typically not complex, and may influence others within the job area through explanation of facts, policies and practices.

$72,371.94 - $90,464.92
