Job description

What You'll Do:

Avalara is looking for a Senior Technical Program Manager to strengthen execution discipline, program governance, and delivery predictability across a complex global integration ecosystem. We will achieve this by bringing structure to large-scale programs. We will also achieve it by standardizing SDLC practices, improving cross-team coordination, and connecting roadmap execution to measurable outcomes. Additionally, increasing visibility for engineering, product, business, and executive partners will contribute to this goal.

You will help Avalara to implement high-visibility integration plans with clearer ownership, stronger technical agreement, and better post-launch measurement and will report to VP, Engineering.

What Your Responsibilities Will Be:
  • You will oversee end-to-end program execution for complex integration plans across globally distributed engineering teams.

  • You will stablish software development lifecycle and Agile operating practices that improve delivery predictability, risk visibility, and accountability.

  • You will define and track program-level measurements, operational metrics, and delivery targets that connect roadmap work to measurable outcomes.

  • You will coordinate engineering, product and partners to align scope, dependencies, milestones, tradeoffs and decisions.

  • You will translate technical architecture discussions into clear execution plans with owners, timelines, risks, dependencies, and measurable success criteria.

  • You will dentify integration contracts, application programming interface dependencies, data flows, error behaviours, and scaling constraints that affect delivery plans.

  • You will surface program risks early by asking structured technical questions, validating assumptions, and escalating tradeoffs with clear options and growth.

  • You will standardise reporting cadences and executive-ready program updates that improve visibility into milestone health, risk, and post-launch outcomes.

  • You will create large cross programs that improve product direction, platform health, Operational rigor, or customer outcomes.

  • You will use artificial intelligence tools and automation responsibly to improve program tracking, reporting, risk analysis, documentation and team member communication.

  • You will share practical artificial intelligence workflows, reusable prompts, and operating practices that improve team productivity and program quality.

What You'll Need to be Successful:
  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Science or Engineering.
  • 5+ years of experience in technical program management, engineering program management, or a similar role supporting software product or platform delivery.
  • Experience managing complex technical programs in a product-based software organisation.
  • Experience working with globally distributed engineering teams and senior team members.
  • Working knowledge of software development lifecycle practices, Agile delivery methods, program governance, and operational metrics.
  • Understand technical architecture, application programming interfaces, system dependencies, data flows, scalability, reliability, and failure modes.
  • Experience building metrics-driven program operating mechanisms, reporting cadences, and delivery tracking processes.
  • Apply AI tools responsibly to improve productivity, documentation, analysis or program execution quality.
