Job description

What You'll Do:

We are looking for a Market Research Specialist to power data-driven decisions across Avalara's tax compliance and regulatory technology portfolio. Global compliance is growing more complex. AI is reshaping how businesses manage tax. Avalara's marketing, product, and go-to-market teams need sharper, faster, and more reliable insight into customers, competitors, and the market. You will deliver that insight.

This is a hands-on role focused on completing primary market research, surfacing actionable insights, and building competitive intelligence across the global tax-tech and compliance solutions landscape. Your work will directly shape positioning, product priorities, and go-to-market strategy — helping Avalara make better decisions, faster.

This is a remote, US-based position reporting to our Senior Manager, Product Marketing

#LI-Remote

What Your Responsibilities Will Be:

Primary Research & Insight Delivery

  • You will complete qualitative and quantitative primary market research that informs marketing, product, and go-to-market strategies for tax compliance solutions.
  • You will design surveys and discussion guides that align with our goals and produce clear, reliable, decision-ready results.
  • You will analyze research data in Excel (can perform complex functions) and Power BI to identify customer needs, buying drivers, adoption barriers, and market trends.
  • You will surface themes from qualitative and open-ended responses related to compliance complexity, automation needs, and customer pain points.

Competitive & Market Intelligence

  • You will build competitive intelligence across the tax compliance, indirect tax, e-invoicing, reporting, and broader compliance technology ecosystem — including competitor positioning and messaging
  • You will integrate secondary research, industry reports, regulatory developments, and internal performance data to strengthen and contextualize insights.

Storytelling & Enablement

  • You will translate market, customer, and competitive insights into clear narratives that drive strategic decision-making.
  • You will coordinate with external research vendors to protect timelines, data quality, and delivery.

Collaboration

  • You will partner with marketing, product, sales, analytics, and commercial teams in a global SaaS environment to ensure insights are understood and acted on.
What You'll Need to be Successful:
  • Bachelor's degree (business, marketing, economics, or social science preferred).
  • 7+ years of hands-on experience in qualitative and quantitative primary market research.
  • Proficiency in Power BI, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Hands-on experience with Qualtrics or a similar survey platform.
  • Analytical and storytelling skills, with the ability to connect insights to business and product decisions.
  • Experience using AI and related tools to improve operational efficiency and the quality of research output.

Avalara is an AI-first company, and you will also use AI to improve the speed, quality, and scale of research and insight delivery. In practice, you will:
