Job Summary:

Provides leadership over different levels of Underwriters in lower level rating decisions and rating model updates. Provides and oversees analytics involving, but not limited to, new business sold, projected Medical Examination Report and the underwriting database. Contributes to the achievement of the financial and marketing objectives for the thorough assessment of group risk, the expected cost to deliver services, the expected marketability and competitiveness of health care services that will result in profitable enrollment. Uses actuarial data in standard application of various rating methodologies and formulas and identifies potential areas for application of underwriting judgment.

Job Duties:

  • Meets with staff on a regular basis to evaluate performance via direct observation and mentoring.
  • Provides feedback, identifies issues, and facilitates problem resolution.
  • Provides support for Management and leadership for the Underwriters relative to financial forecasting, profitability and expense analysis, and assigned special projects.
  • Provides technical, analytical and business guidance to other team members.
  • Participates in leadership decisions regarding future vision and strategy.
  • Analyzes claims experience, demographics (age and gender), industry, enrollment, benefit plan options, geographic region, network access and competitor data.
  • Predicates underwriting guidelines and strategies applicable to each group.
  • Presents key accounts to discuss premium rating strategies, product offerings, provider network access and market position specific to the account.
  • Completes Request for Proposals from consultants and detailed explanations of rate adjustments for renewing and potential clients, premium rating methodology utilized and configuration of benefits to sales, client, broker, or consultant.
