Job description

At Clario, part of Thermo Fisher Scientific, we are looking for a Director, R&D Software Engineering to lead the modernization, scalability, and reliability of our software platforms supporting Digital Physiology solutions and clinical trial technologies across cardiac and respiratory studies.

This is a unique opportunity for a highly technical engineering leader to shape the future of clinical research technology by driving innovation, platform transformation, and operational excellence. The Director will combine deep technical expertise, strategic vision, and organizational leadership to deliver scalable, secure, and reliable solutions that help advance Clario’s mission of transforming patients’ lives through technology-enabled clinical research.

The Director will oversee multiple engineering teams responsible for software development, architecture, DevOps modernization, and continuous improvement initiatives, supporting approximately 4 direct reports and 60–70 engineering resources, including contractors. The ideal candidate will have experience modernizing enterprise software platforms, improving system reliability and observability, and leading large-scale engineering organizations in complex, regulated environments.

 

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Scale engineering teams and contractor capacity based on business priorities and project needs.

  • Lead the modernization of Clario’s clinical software platforms, including front-end and back-end systems built using technologies such as .NET, Java, AWS, and Oracle databases.

  • Define and execute technical strategy to improve platform scalability, reliability, performance, and delivery speed.

  • Lead engineering teams responsible for clinical data ingestion systems, software development, architecture, DevOps transformation, and platform improvements.

  • Drive adoption of modern engineering practices, including DevOps, CI/CD, automation, and improved software delivery processes.

  • Establish platform reliability and observability practices through effective monitoring strategies, system health metrics, performance tracking, and proactive issue identification.

  • Provide technical leadership and architectural guidance for secure, scalable, and highly available systems supporting clinical research operations.

  • Partner closely with Product Management, Clinical Systems, Quality, and business stakeholders to align technology initiatives with customer and business priorities.

  • Serve as a senior technical escalation point, helping teams resolve complex engineering challenges and improving overall system stability.

  • Mentor engineering leaders and foster a culture of innovation, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

 

What We Look For

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field; advanced degree preferred.

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience, including significant experience leading engineering teams and enterprise technology initiatives.

  • Proven experience managing large-scale engineering organizations, including distributed teams, engineering leaders, and contractors.

  • Strong technical background in enterprise software development, including experience with Java, .NET/C#, Oracle databases, full-stack development, and modern software architectures.

  • Experience leading platform modernization initiatives, DevOps transformation, and improvements in software delivery practices.

  • Experience implementing observability, monitoring, reliability, and performance management strategies across complex platforms.

  • Experience working with medical device software, healthcare technology, clinical data ingestion systems, or other regulated environments requiring high reliability and quality standards.

  • Strong stakeholder management skills with experience partnering with Product Management, business leaders, and executive stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in clinical research technology, digital health, life sciences, or healthcare software environments.

  • Experience integrating software platforms with medical devices, digital endpoints, or connected technologies.

  • Experience scaling engineering organizations through a combination of internal teams and external contractors.

  • Experience leading global engineering teams and large-scale transformation initiatives.
