CLINIC’s work focuses on five core areas: advocacy, capacity building, national partnerships, religious immigration services, and training and legal support.As the largest charitable legal immigration network in the nation, CLINIC provides substantive legal and program management training and resources, as well as advocacy support at state, local and national levels. We train nearly 10,000 people each year on immigration-related topics. CLINIC also has a team of immigration attorneys who specialize in religious worker immigration law, assisting Catholic archdioceses, dioceses and religious communities to navigate this complex area of law.

Job description

POSITION: Senior Attorney

REPORTS TO: Supervising Senior Attorney

SECTION: Training and Technical Assistance (TTA)

STATUS: Exempt, Bargaining, Remote 

SALARY RANGE: $87,000-93,000


Summary Description: Senior Attorneys in the Training and Technical Assistance (TTA) team conduct trainings (both in-person and online), provide technical support, and write/update written resources. They must be able to analyze and apply immigration law principles to complex questions and fact scenarios. This Senior Attorney position requires specialized knowledge and experience in immigration enforcement, detention and bond, removal defense, the immigration consequences of crimes, and practice before the Board of Immigration Appeals. The Senior Attorney also has primary responsibility for managing CLINIC's BIA Pro Bono project.


Primary Responsibilities:

Training and Technical Assistance

  • MaintainabroadknowledgeandunderstandingofU.S.immigrationlawandremaininformed about changes in immigration regulations and policies.
  • Maintain specialized knowledge in immigration enforcement, removal defense, the immigration consequences of crimes, detention and bond, and practice before the Board of Immigration Appeals(BIA).
  • ProvideaccurateandcomprehensivelegaladvicetoaffiliatesthroughtheAsktheExpertsportal.
  • Prepare and present trainings(in-person and remote)on substantive immigration law and practice topics.
  • Maintain accurate records in CLINIC’s data management system.
  • Asassigned,acceptopportunitiestospeakatconferencesonimmigrationlawissues.
  • Exercise independent legal judgment.

Writing

  • As assigned, write articles and assist in updating CLINIC’s written resources.
  • Serve as a Subject Matter Expert and consult with other CLINIC teams on changes to law and policy, emerging issues, comments to proposed regulations, and revisions to immigration forms.

Special Projects

  • Manage the wind down process for CLINIC’s BIA Pro Bono Project. Monitor the status of pending cases before the Board of Immigration Appeals, the Executive Office for Immigration Review, and U.S. Courts of Appeal. 
  • Maintain contact, support and mentor pro bono attorneys representing clients before EOIR, the BIA, and U.S. Courts of Appeal, as needed. Mentorship may also include advising pro bono attorneys prior to clients attending ICE check-ins. 
  • As needed, assist with other grants and special projects.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Juris Doctor Degree
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of immigration law practice including specialized knowledge and experience in immigration enforcement, detention, removal defense, the immigration consequences of crimes, and practice before the BIA.
  • Member in good standing of the Bar in any State or the District of Columbia
  • Strong legal analytical skills
  • Ability to travel several times a year for trainings and conferences
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
