Summary

Marathon TS is seeking a Senior Frontend Engineer for a contract role to build and evolve our consumer weather web applications with a strong emphasis on mobile web engineering. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver fast, responsive experiences including real-time forecasts, interactive maps, and AI-driven features.

The ideal candidate has expert-level command of React, Next.js, and modern CSS/Tailwind, with a focus on mobile web optimization and reliability at scale. Success requires strong technical decision-making and clear communication to align engineering standards with product goals.

Responsibilities

  • Designing, building, and shipping features for client web applications using React and Next.js, with a mobile-first approach throughout.
  • Collaborating with product managers, designers, and data teams to translate weather data and AI capabilities into intuitive, responsive user experiences.
  • Owning performance profiling and optimization targeting Core Web Vitals (LCP, CLS, INP) to ensure smooth rendering, fast load times, and reliable behavior across mobile networks and devices.
  • Building responsive, accessible UI components that work seamlessly across screen sizes, with mobile web as the primary target.
  • Integrating with backend APIs and real-time data streams for weather data, mapping, and analytics.
  • Contributing to frontend architecture decisions, code standards, and review practices that maintain quality across an actively developed codebase.

Qualifications

  • Programming Skills: Proficiency in JavaScript and TypeScript, with strong command of React and Next.js.
  • Mobile Web Expertise: Deep understanding of mobile web performance, responsive design patterns, touch interaction, and the constraints of low-bandwidth mobile environments.
  • Styling: Strong command of modern CSS — including layout, animation, and responsive design patterns.
  • API Integration: Experience consuming REST APIs, handling real-time data, and managing complex client-side state with tools such as React Query, Zustand, or Redux.
  • Performance: Hands-on experience optimizing Core Web Vitals and measuring performance with tools like Lighthouse, WebPageTest, or Chrome DevTools.
  • Version Control: Proficient in Git-based workflows and code collaboration via GitHub or similar platforms.
  • Strong problem-solving instincts and the ability to operate effectively in a self-directed, fast-paced, consumer-facing product environment.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with geospatial data, mapping libraries (e.g., Mapbox, Google Maps), or data visualization.
  • Familiarity with AI feature integration in web products, such as personalization or LLM-backed experiences.
  • Experience with Tailwind CSS or a similar utility-first CSS framework.
