Job description

System Administrator / Infrastructure Engineer

Location: Remote, UK / Europe

💼 About the role

We are looking for a System Administrator to help manage our server infrastructure, cyber resilience and network security – helping us take PQShield to the next level as we continue to grow.  You will report to the Infrastructure Technical Director.

PQShield has now grown to 95 people, which means this role will be very hands-on, but at the same time you’ll be developing the long-term business, shaping one of the most important cyber security upgrade cycles in history.

Our server infrastructure, policies and documentation are developed and mature, but we have plenty more big projects to take on as our infrastructure environment constantly expands.

⚒️ What you’ll be doing

  • Developing and supporting the management of our existing development servers – these are physical machines running Linux (CentOS, Rocky Linux, Xen Enterprise and Ubuntu) and MacOS.
  • Working with the Infrastructure Technical Director, Technical Leads, and COO to develop and implement a scalable server, network and storage strategy as the company grows.
  • Installing and managing our industry specific tooling and configuring  systems to manage jobs across a small computing cluster.
  • Developing and managing monitoring, alerting, and logging frameworks to proactively identify and resolve system bottlenecks.
  • Supporting the management of our network infrastructure and IT security across the company.
  • Working with the rest of the Infrastructure Team to maintain and develop comprehensive documentation of the environment.
  • Working with our suppliers to procure new equipment (such as servers and switches) when required.
  • Helping our team with technical IT queries when they arise.
  • Helping to maintain our certifications, including Cyber Essentials and the IT focussed parts of ISO 27001.

🎯 Required Skills And Qualifications

  • You have great Linux administration skills (including Ubuntu, CentOS and Debian based distributions).
  • You have experience building Docker images and running their associated CI jobs.
  • You are hands-on – you’re comfortable scripting, configuring, and installing things.
  • You are experienced in network security – including configuration of firewalls and appropriate security policies.
  • You are organised and like to document your work and the systems that you build (we use Google Workspace and Atlassian tools).
  • You like collaborating with other engineers, are empathetic to colleagues’ problems, and can help tailor policies and processes in this regard.
  • You are keen to explore new technologies and ways of working, such as using AI to help solve problems.
  • You have great attention to detail.
  • You like getting stuff done, building and improving things, and have a ‘no job too small’ attitude.
  • You are creative in problem solving but conservative in change management.
  • You have a ‘keep it simple’ engineering mindset.

🔍 Nice to have

  • Red Hat Certified.
  • Experience with MacOS and Windows Server.
  • Experience with EDA software.
  • Experience with self-hosted GitLab.
  • Comfortable on the CLI and with local tooling.
  • Comfortable and familiar with Ansible.
  • A keen interest in cryptography is helpful.
  • Spaces rather than tabs – obviously.
  • Vim rather than EMACS – of course.

🏆 Some of the perks of working with us:

  • Unparalleled opportunities to learn and accelerated career development.
  • A collaborative, team environment with people who truly love what they do.
  • Competitive salary and share option scheme.
  • Flexible and hybrid working, and a working from home budget.
  • Private health insurance for yourself and your family.
  • 25 days annual leave (plus bank holidays and two wellness weeks).
  • 50% gym membership discount.
  • The chance to work with a spirited, smart, and friendly team!
