Job description

When it comes to construction, you’re a leader, not a follower. You can assess an active construction site with confidence. You’re comfortable with equipment and you work well with contractors. You’re straight to the point, but you listen too. You are forthright as you represent the project owner. You strive to make sure the job is done right the first time.

Binnie is seeking a Civil Construction Inspector to join our Structures & Civil Inspection Division, which provides construction management and supervision, quality management and assurance, contract administration, civil inspection, and construction survey services to clients including the Ministry of Transportation and Transit, BC Hydro, major municipalities, and developers across British Columbia.

This is a part temporary “as and when” position. Work hours are variable and dependent on operational needs, ranging from zero hours during off-peak periods up to approximately 30 hours per week during active construction phases from May to October. You’ll be responsible for inspections across the Peace region with work primarily focused in the Fort St john area. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to a strong pipeline of projects, join a supportive and experienced team, and enjoy meaningful work with a high degree of autonomy, variety, and professional growth.

YOUR ROLE:

  • Ongoing inspection of work at specific stop/inspection points during the construction
  • Ensure that construction follows and meets BC Hydro’s/Owner specifications and standards by scheduling daily site visits during the construction phase of the project
  • Monitor that the contractor’s underground plan adheres to the related safety standards
  • Confirm that the contractor’s works are satisfactorily completed in accordance with BC Hydro’s/Owner specifications and standards and the installation of cable and transformers and other hydro facilities by BC Hydro/Owner line crews can take place without any issues
  • Constructability review support on routine and non-routine, standard and non-standard civil designs in various stages of planning to implementation for internally and externally designed civil projects
  • Assist the Civil Inspector Work Leader with delivering and receiving externally contracted inspection and survey work, by performing duties such as evaluating work requirements, time frame, location, and complexity of work
  • Provide final inspection and certification of installation work completed before confirming that site can be energized

WHAT YOU BRING:

  • Graduated from high school and completed a basic civil inspection or survey course
  • Minimum of 3 years of utility construction experience related to electrical utility underground construction dependent on education (ie. technical diploma counts towards experience criteria)
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Civil Inspector or equivalent civil inspector experience in the utility industry
  • Completion of Power Supply Safety Program (PSSP) course within eight months of hire, and responsible for completion of PSSP re-certification training every 2 years as required by BC Hydro.
  • Strong working knowledge of desktop productivity applications such as Microsoft Office Suite or equivalent
  • Ability to interpret specifications, standards, and drawings
  • Previous experience in civil construction inspection or surveying preferred
  • Strong conflict resolution, communication, and stakeholder management skills
  • Willing and able to work outdoors in variable weather conditions, travel throughout British Columbia, and work away from home as project requirements dictate
  • Valid driver’s license
