What You'll Do:

We are looking for an experienced Senior Workday Integration & Extend Developer to design, build, and support scalable solutions across our Workday platform. You will focus on delivering integrations, developing Extend applications, and leveraging orchestration and automation to streamline business processes across the employee lifecycle.

Avalara is scaling its global people technology and requires a reliable, secure, and automated Workday ecosystem to support growth, compliance, and employee experience. As part of this evolution, you will play a key part in embedding AI and automation into Workday operations - helping to improve speed, accuracy, and overall operational efficiency.

You will partner with functional and technical teams to translate business needs into efficient, well-designed Workday solutions, while ensuring alignment with Workday security and governance standards.

You will report to Director, People Technology.

  • Improving operational reliability: Delivers stable, scalable integrations and applications that ensure critical HR, payroll, and financial data flows accurately and consistently across systems
  • Supporting security and compliance standards: Builds solutions aligned with Workday security frameworks and governance practices to protect sensitive data and support audit readiness
  • Driving efficiency through automation: Leverages orchestration, AI, and automation to reduce manual effort, improve data quality, and streamline business processes
  • Enhancing employee and stakeholder experience: Enable seamless, data exchange and solutions that support employees, managers, and business partners
What Your Responsibilities Will Be:

Design, build, and maintain end-to-end Workday integrations (e.g., Studio, EIB, RaaS, APIs, SFTP) aligned with business needs and strategic priorities.

  • You will build and support Workday Extend applications to address business gaps, improve user experience, and reduce manual effort.
  • You will develop and deploy Workday Orchestration solutions to automate and streamline cross-functional processes.
  • You will ensure integrations and applications are scalable, reliable, and aligned to critical workflows (e.g., payroll, benefits, downstream systems).
  • You will provide technical expertise and apply best practices for integration design, architecture, and Workday platform optimization
  • You will monitor and resolve integration and security issues, minimizing business disruption and ensuring data integrity.
  • You will partner with HR, IT, Finance, and external vendors to deliver integration aligned to business outcomes.
  • You will apply understanding of Workday security (e.g., security groups, domains, business process security) to ensure solutions align with governance and data protection standards
  • You will leverage AI and automation to improve integration monitoring, anomaly detection, testing, and documentation workflows.

  • All critical Workday integrations operate with high reliability, minimal failures, and reduced manual intervention.
  • Measurable reduction in integration-related incidents and resolution times.
  • AI-driven automation is implemented in at least 2–3 key areas (e.g., monitoring, testing, or reporting), resulting in improved efficiency and accuracy.
  • Workday Extend or automation solutions are delivered that improve employee or business workflows.
  • Clear documentation and governance processes are established and consistently followed.
What You'll Need to be Successful:

AI Expectations

  • Apply AI tools to automate integration monitoring, error detection, and root cause analysis.
  • Use AI to accelerate development (e.g., generating integration logic, test cases, or documentation).
  • Leverage AI to identify anomalies in data flows, security access patterns, or audit logs.
  • Quantify improvements such as reduced manual effort, faster resolution times, or improved data accuracy.
  • Share AI best practices with the broader team to elevate overall capability.

 

Qualifications

  • B.S. in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical field.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in Workday integration development.
  • Experience building and maintaining Workday integrations (RaaS, EIB, Cloud Connect (PICOF, PECI, CCW, CCB) Workday Studio, Orchestrations, SFTP).
  • Experience with JSON, XML, XSLT, and web service protocols (REST/SOAP).
  • Experience with Workday business process framework and a understanding of Workday security (including configurable security).
  • Experience building and supporting integrations across HR and enterprise platforms.
