We’re an Australian investing platform that helps ambitious people confidently grow their wealth. By offering seamless, immersive access to ASX and Wall St, we’ve empowered a new wave of investors. Today, we have 750,000+ customers and more than A$8B under administration. Join us as we continue to reshape the financial industry, inspire investor confidence and unleash the investor in everyone.

About the role

We are looking for an Engineering Technical Lead to join our Payments squad in Sydney.

Money movement sits at the heart of the Stake experience. Every deposit, withdrawal, transfer and funding event is a critical moment of trust between our customers and our platform. The Payments squad owns the systems that enable customers to move money seamlessly, securely and reliably across Stake's growing suite of products.

As an Engineering Technical Lead, you'll lead the team responsible for building and scaling Stake's payments capabilities. You'll sit at the intersection of engineering excellence, product thinking and people leadership, partnering closely with Product, Operations, Finance, Risk and Compliance to deliver experiences that are reliable, intuitive and built for scale.

This is a pivotal leadership role with significant ownership across customer experience, operational reliability and platform evolution. From payment processing and reconciliation through to banking integrations, fraud controls and operational tooling, your team will help define how customers fund, move and access their money across Stake. You'll also play a key role in shaping the technical, operational and cultural foundations that support Stake's next phase of growth. We work hybrid spending 3 days in our beautiful, dog-friendly Sydney office.

What success looks like

Within your first two years at Stake, you will have:

  • Built and developed a high-performing engineering team with a strong culture of ownership, accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Improved the reliability, scalability and operational resilience of Stake's payments platform, ensuring customers can move money with confidence.
  • Delivered meaningful improvements across deposits, withdrawals, account funding, payment processing and related operational experiences.
  • Established clear technical direction and architectural standards that support increasing payment volumes, product expansion and future growth.
  • Strengthened observability, incident management and operational processes across critical money movement systems.
  • Built trusted partnerships across Product, Operations, Finance, Risk and Compliance, helping teams move quickly while maintaining strong controls and customer outcomes.
  • Developed engineers into stronger technical contributors and future leaders within the organisation.
  • Contributed meaningfully to Stake's broader engineering strategy, culture and organisational growth.

You’ll thrive here if…

  • You have experience leading engineering teams and understand how to balance people leadership, delivery and technical decision-making.
  • You care deeply about customer outcomes and understand the importance of trust, reliability and operational excellence in payments experiences.
  • You bring strong technical judgement and can confidently navigate architecture, platform and operational decisions.
  • You thrive in fast-moving environments and enjoy solving complex problems with imperfect information.
  • You know how to create alignment across technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • You combine ambition with pragmatism, focusing on what creates the greatest long-term impact for customers and the business.

Bonus if you’ve ever

  • Built or scaled payments, banking, fintech or other customer-facing financial products.
  • Worked with payment processors, banking integrations, reconciliation systems or money movement infrastructure.
  • Led teams responsible for high-availability, mission-critical systems where reliability and customer trust are paramount.
  • Worked closely with risk, compliance, fraud or operational teams within regulated environments.
  • Managed complex third-party integrations, vendors or platform partnerships.
  • Helped scale engineering organisations through periods of significant growth.
