Location Preference: Commutable distance to Wyomissing, PA.

Essential Functions:

  • Selects, grows, and maintains a profitable book of business for assigned middle market territory adhering to underwriting authority. Evaluates complex accounts, such as different business operations, multiple lines of business or special pricing requirements, for risk selection and pricing purposes.

  • Analyzes exposure, company and regional risk appetite, account premium and loss history, financial data, line(s) of business, price guidance, motor vehicle records, online sources of information, reports from premium audit or Loss Control and other relevant information to underwrite policies. Offers appropriate coverage, terms and conditions for exposures. 

  • Develops and fosters agency relationships. Educates agents on EMC products, underwriting appetite, systems, and services.

  • Visits agencies to discuss accounts and provide agents with updates at EMC. Identifies opportunities and potential barriers within agency relationships.

  • Collaborates with marketing representatives to ensure agents receive superior customer experiences, responsiveness, and select EMC as their insurer of choice.

  • Effectively explains risk acceptance and/or rejection decisions to agents.  Seeks feedback from agents and takes action to improve their experience and grow strong books of business.

  • Coordinates with marketing and regional management in the agency planning and review processes. Monitors progress of assigned agents and guides agents in achieving annual goals.

  • Serves as a technical resource for underwriting team members. Performs peer reviews of work completed by less experienced underwriters and provides training on identified issues and areas for improvement.

  • Researches and shares industry changes, competition, target markets and new products.

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in insurance or business administration, or equivalent relevant experience

  • Three years of experience in commercial lines underwriting or related experience

  • Insurance designations, such as AINS, AU, CIC, or CPCU preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of underwriting and risk analysis

  • Strong analytical and negotiating skills

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to make sound decisions

  • Ability to work effectively with others, as well as independently

  • Ability to maintain high standards of professional competence

  • Excellent customer service skills

  • Strong computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office and social media

  • Ability to work on multiple projects while meeting deadlines

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to speak in front of others

  • Strong presentation skills preferred

  • Occasional travel; a valid driver’s license with an acceptable motor vehicle report per company standards required if driving

The hiring salary range for this position will vary based on geographic location, falling within either of the following:

$78,726 - $108,771 or $87,008 - $119,646

A hiring range represents a subset of the full salary range. The actual salary will depend on several factors, including relevant education, skills, and experience of an applicant, geographic location, and business needs.
