Job description

Position: ICCU Staff Nurse
Department: Intensive Cardiac Care Unit
Location: Hospital / Cardiac Center
Reports To: Nursing Supervisor / ICCU In-charge

🔷 Role Summary

The ICCU Nurse is responsible for providing specialized, high-quality nursing care to critically ill cardiac patients requiring continuous monitoring, hemodynamic support, and advanced cardiac care. The nurse ensures safe medication administration, timely interventions, and effective communication with the multidisciplinary care team.

🔷 Key Responsibilities

1. Patient Care & Monitoring

  • Monitor vital signs continuously using multipara monitors (ECG, SpO2, BP, CVP, Resp Rate).

  • Perform cardiac assessments: heart sounds, peripheral perfusion, edema, chest pain evaluation.

  • Identify early signs of cardiac deterioration (arrhythmias, hypotension, MI symptoms).

  • Assist in ventilator management and oxygen therapy.

  • Provide post-operative care for cardiac procedures (angioplasty, bypass, device implantation).


    2. Emergency Management

  • Respond immediately to cardiac emergencies:

    • Cardiac arrest (Code Blue)

    • Arrhythmias

    • Acute MI

    • Pulmonary edema

  • Perform CPR and follow ACLS protocol.

  • Assist doctors during emergency interventions.

    3. Medication Administration

  • Administer cardiac medications:

    • Inotropes

    • Anticoagulants

    • Vasodilators

    • Anti-arrhythmics

    • Diuretics

  • Titrate IV infusions as per hemodynamic status.

  • Ensure safe handling of high-alert medications.

    4. Procedures & Equipment Handling

  • Competent in:

    • 12-lead ECG

    • ABG sampling

    • Central line care

    • Foley catheterization

    • Ryle's tube insertion

  • Assist with procedures like cardioversion, defibrillation, pacing.

    5. Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate nursing notes, medication records, fluid balance charts.

  • Document all critical events and interventions.

  • Communicate effectively with doctors and shift teams.

    6. Patient & Family Support

  • Educate patient and family on post-cardiac care, medications, lifestyle changes.

  • Provide emotional support during critical situations.

    🔷 Required Qualifications

  • B.Sc Nursing / GNM

  • Registered with State Nursing Council

  • ICCU/ICU experience preferred (1–5 years)
