Job description

 

Bald Mountain is an open-pit mine with a large estimated mineral resource in the largest private mining land package in the U.S. The mine is located in White Pine County, one of the best mining jurisdictions in the world, along the southern extension of the prolific Carlin trend. Bald Mountain and the nearby Round Mountain mine make up Kinross’ Nevada operations. 

Bald Mountain is an important contributor to the economy of northeastern Nevada and maintains a comprehensive environmental strategy including wildlife protection, habitat recovery and education.

Job Summary

Under the direction of the Environmental Superintendent or Senior Environmental Engineer, assist with the implementation of programs and procedures to ensure environmental compliance for KG Mining (Bald Mountain), Inc., Bald Mountain Mine, located in White Pine County Nevada. Ensure that all field sampling, monitoring, inspections and data management are conducted in accordance with company requirements and in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations while continuously aligning daily functions to reflect Kinross’ values. Responsible for various permit data management including on-site document and compliance management. 

Essential Functions

• Process and/or fulfill day-to-day issues specific to area(s) of expertise, including resolving complex business, financial, service needs/challenges
• Identify matters of high complexity or risk and makes recommendations to escalate to senior subject matter experts, as required
• Participate in projects related to area(s) of expertise, leading particular work streams or initiatives as assigned
• Lead the completion of a moderate to complex process or function within established procedures
• Act as a key point of contact / relationship owner with a designated internal group
• Maintain relationships with industry contacts (internal and external), regulatory officials and external consultants for purposes of enhancing business effectiveness within the scope of accountability 
• Conduct timely analysis of information and develop reports / presentations on assigned area(s) of expertise
• Contribute to the improvement of operational effectiveness of the portfolio within prescribed limits 
• Resolve operating/ technical problems within area(s) of expertise 
• Participate in resolution of problems with other departments, without having direct authority 

Education and Experience

•    Maintain a competent level of knowledge of environmental permit conditions and environmental regulations applicable to the site.
•    Conduct compliance sampling throughout the site operations, including but not limited to, surface water sampling, groundwater sampling, soil sampling and/or other materials as required by regulatory framework. 
•    Maintain sampling and monitoring databases for water, and other permit requirements to provide data and reports required for permit compliance.
•    Effectively communicate and interact with Environmental department and site personnel to maximize informational exchange and environmental compliance.
•    Complete regular and frequent on-site inspections to ensure regulatory and permit compliance.
•    Maintain project permits in accordance with the environmental obligation tracking system.
•    Assist with the training of site and contractor personnel in environmental compliance issues.
•    Assist with environmental studies and projects conducted at all sites.
•    Conduct safe, efficient, reliable, and accurate sampling and monitoring in accordance with company and regulatory requirements.  
•    Meet or exceed established performance expectations set by management.
•    Work safely in all areas, and identify potential safety hazards. 
•    Work without significant risk of harm to self and others.
•    Perform other duties as required.
•    Adheres to all safety and environmental considerations and have a strong commitment to safe working practices. 

Qualifications and Skill Requirements

•    Employee must have sufficient education to read and write instructions, perform simple mathematical calculations, and keep records (required).
•    Willingness to work outdoors, often in adverse weather conditions (required).
•    Able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. over short distances (required).
•    Ability to develop and update environmental documents, including report writing (required).
•    Ability to work well with mine site personnel in various departments and positions throughout the site (required).
•    Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel (required). 
•    Experience working with laboratory data and results in EDMS or other laboratory sampling programs (preferred).
•    Ability to create power point presentations (preferred). 
•    Ability to communicate technical information clearly to diverse audiences (required).
•    Must be a self-starter with the ability to work independently and with others in a team environment (required).

•    Valid Nevada driver’s license (or ability and intent to obtain) (required). 

•    Minimum of 2 to 3 years’ experience with environmental permitting, sampling/monitoring and/or working in the mining related field (preferred).
•    BA or BS degree in engineering, (preferably environmental, civil, or mining), natural resources management, or STEM field or other environmental related discipline (preferred but not required).
•    Previous experience performing monitoring and sampling preferred with basic knowledge of mining operations as well as general environmental monitoring (preferred).
•    Preferred certifications: DOT HazMat and RCRA.
•    Post probationary employment period there is opportunity to have discretionary work from home days per Environmental manager discretion and dependent upon subject matter managed with this position.
•    Transportation to and from the mine site available; parking lot in Spring Creek. 
•    4 day (Monday – Thursday):10-hour/day work schedule plus transportation time.
