Position Overview:

The Construction Underwriter is responsible for providing consistent, accurate, and quality loan decisions in accordance with CrossCountry Mortgage, LLC, and secondary market investor standards. This position is responsible for evaluating loans to maximize organizational profit and minimize risk or loss by examining loan documentation for accuracy and completeness. The Construction Underwriter collaborates with Loan Originators, Branch Managers, and production staff to secure all required documents. This position validates income, assets and collateral documents including self-employed tax returns.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate loan applications for risk, accuracy, consistency, and investor requirements.

  • Review construction-related documents to ensure compliance with agency standards.

  • Assess new loan files for investor and program criteria, processing at least 40 loans per month with a 24-hour turnaround.

  • Verify application details by comparing transmittals, credit reports, liabilities, and mortgage histories to investor guidelines.

  • Calculate borrower income using required documentation, analyzing significant changes.

  • Examine asset statements to confirm required assets and validate large deposits.

  • Confirm title ownership and compliance with investor requirements, ensuring all liens and judgments are addressed.

  • Validate appraisal accuracy and order value reviews for high-risk loans.

  • Ensure regulatory compliance with state and federal requirements.

  • Calculate net tangible benefit for applicable transactions.

  • Verify rate lock details against underwriting records, including program, LTV, credit score, and penalties.

  • Process final conditions for underwriting approval within 24 hours.

  • Review assigned loan files daily, including new submissions, resubmissions, and final conditions.

  • Stay up to date on investor and agency guidelines.

  • Approve or recommend loan actions based on proper documentation.

  • Communicate proactively with Loan Originators, Processors, and other stakeholders to support loan decisions and investor requirements.

  • Apply underwriting expertise to optimize loan approvals and investor outcomes.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • 2+ years of Construction Lending Underwriting experience.

  • 5+ years of Mortgage Underwriting experience (FHA, VA and Conventional) with thorough agency guideline knowledge.

  • DE, SAR, and LAPP certifications are required; experience with USDA is a plus.

  • Encompass LOS experience, preferred.

  • Thorough knowledge of ATR/QM requirements.

  • Knowledge of compliance and disclosure requirements.

  • Knowledge of Closing, Post-Closing and Quality Control responsibilities.

  • Encompass LOS experience, preferred.

  • Excellent prioritization and time management skills to meet minimum production standards.

  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Pay Range: 

  • Hourly Rate: 43.26 - 48.07 

  • Bonus Eligible if applicable
