Job description

About Skift

Skift is the leading business intelligence and media company in travel, delivering news, research, and global events that power smarter decisions across the industry. We convene senior leaders and innovators who rely on Skift for clarity, insight, and meaningful connection in a fast-moving global market.

The Opportunity

We’re looking for a highly disciplined, fast-paced South East Asia Reporter to join Skift, the most influential media and events company in the global business of travel. This role is ideal for an independent, self-starting journalist who can set their own daily agenda, consistently meet tight deadlines, and thrive in a fully distributed environment. You are a natural news-breaker who can uncover original stories while collaborating seamlessly across global time zones. We are actively looking for candidates based in Bangkok.

This position is remote and requires a high level of coordination and communication skills to be successful. You must be able to work independently, meet goals, set tasks in a timely manner, join meetings via video, and periodically work outside normal company hours for special events or projects.

Why This Role Matters

The South East Asia beat is critical to Skift's globally influential editorial operation. Spanning airlines, resort development, online travel, tech, tourism policy, and M&A, this region is one of the most dynamic in the global travel economy. By transforming raw industry movements into sharp analysis and enterprise stories, you ensure our readers get unparalleled, original insights they simply cannot find anywhere else. Your work directly shapes how the world understands the business of travel in South East Asia.

Some of What You’ll Do

Daily Reporting & High-Velocity Output

  • Report and write across a variety of formats, seamlessly shifting between breaking news, original reporting, sharp analysis, and deep-dive enterprise stories.
  • Move fast and think big: take responsibility for filing quickly on time-sensitive stories while keeping one eye on the longer-term trends shaping the region's travel economy.
  • Stay deeply read-in on global and regional travel news, keeping a pulse on Skift’s coverage and the broader competitive landscape.

Investigative Ownership & Source Development

  • Develop and break original stories by drawing on deep industry sources, regulatory filings, corporate disclosures, and your own relentless legwork.
  • Exercise astute and ethical journalistic judgment in your everyday reporting and source interactions.

Industry Engagement & Collaboration

  • Travel to cover critical industry events, Skift’s own global conferences, and participate in media appearances when opportunities arise.
  • Communicate openly and share information regularly with colleagues, building strong, cohesive working relationships across our global, remote newsroom.

What You’ll Bring

  • 2–3 years of experience in business reporting. B2B or business publishing experience is highly preferred, though strong consumer media experience will be considered.
  • Industry Fluency: A solid working familiarity with the travel industries in South East Asia, ideally backed by an extensive network of contacts in the sector.
  • Editorial Excellence: Exceptional writing and copy-editing skills, with a proven ability to tell compelling business stories.
  • Technical Proficiency: Comfort working in WordPress, basic photo editing tools, Google Docs, and standard remote collaboration software.
  • Agility and Independence: The discipline to set your own agenda and thrive in a remote setting while remaining highly connected and enthusiastic about teamwork.
  • Bonus: Proficiency in regional languages is a significant plus for our global coverage.

Success Metrics

  • Velocity & Quality: The ability to file time-sensitive breaking news quickly while consistently delivering deeper, high-quality enterprise reporting.
  • Editorial Impact: Producing original reporting and sharp analysis that provides our audience with exclusive insights and moves the needle in the travel industry.
  • Source Development: Successful, ongoing cultivation of extensive industry contacts and the consistent unearthing of unique angles through corporate disclosures and legwork.
  • Collaboration: Proactive communication, reliable deadline management, and seamless teamwork within our diverse, globally distributed editorial team.

What We Offer

  • Opportunity to grow within a respected and innovative media company.
  • Exposure to the intersection of media, events, and travel intelligence.
  • Collaborative, supportive, and remote-friendly work environment.
